About Cars by Year

Cars by Year publishes plain-language reports built from the public data of the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA): consumer complaints, recall campaigns, manufacturer technical service bulletins (TSBs) and defect investigations.

The site currently covers 211 makes, 2,527 models and 14,046 model-year reports, built from about 1,598,331 complaints.

What we add

NHTSA’s own database is complete but hard to compare. For each model year we count the complaints, group them by the part they name, show the mileage at which they were filed, line them up with recalls and bulletins, and place the year next to the other years of the same model.

What we are not

We are not affiliated with NHTSA, any manufacturer, dealer or law firm, and we do not sell vehicles or leads. We do not give legal, safety or repair advice. Complaints are unverified reports from individuals.
