Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“Transmission dip-stick is too long and causes a false reading of fluid level! Hence, when fluid is 1 qt.(+/-) low dip-stick shows full, even though vehicle will not engage in gear. Many owners have towed to transmission shop for repair when all is needed is additional fluid. This causes unnessary costs (expensive, etc.) which most shops will charge for as high priced repair &/or installation of re-built transmission worst of all, the stalled vehicle can result in injury &/or death !!!”

NHTSA complaint #10051070, filed 2003-12, 79,000 miles

“Don't know actual mileage and don't know what we can do about repair. Mechanic quoted exorbitant cost to rebuild odometer head plus cost of labor to remove & replace.also he advised that a dealer told him that this was a common problem in these cars, & replacing with a used part would likely result in same problem. What do we do?”

NHTSA complaint #757990, filed 2002-02

“Vehicle was placed in the park position, then vehicle was placed from park to reverse, and the vehicle took off in reverse. Consumer then placed the vehicle in park, and the vehicle took off in drive; foot was on the brake pedal. Vehicle continued to move, hit a fence to stop the vehicle. Consumer has contacted the dealer, dealer unable to determine the cause at this time.”

NHTSA complaint #815901, filed 1997-09

“Stopped at light when began to accelerate. Heard a loud grinding noise, came to a hault. When got out, there were metal pieces from the transmission housing all over the street. Vehicle had to be towed from that point. Buick refused to help, because consumer was the second owner and not the first.”

NHTSA complaint #822554, filed 1998-05

“Consumer states while vehicle was at a stop position heard a noise shifted vehicle into neutral, and without warning vehicle popped out of gear and shifted into reverse.”
