“When driving down the street my Malibu just shuts down ..I bought a battery and alternator and sensors to fix my car .put in shop to find out it was the ignition switch. I'm sacred to drive on the highway it might stop and cause an fatal accident . This is a real safety issue that need to be addressed..thank you”
NHTSA complaint #11190598, filed 2019-03, 179,456 miles“We started having different problems with the fan not wanting to work for the air conditioning, lights not wanting to work and failure to start. We had it fixed by a local mechanic on 5/21/2014. I feel like this ignition switch recall from GM needs to be extended to older vehicles and that the key fob is a cover up for the bigger issue.”
NHTSA complaint #10640176, filed 2014-09, 116,000 miles“My Malibu will start on its own and run without the key. I have found it running several times or attempting to start when the doors are locked and the keys are no where near the vehicle. This is happening when the vehicle is parked. And the horn goes off randomly and now is burned out.”
NHTSA complaint #10823965, filed 2016-02, 130,000 miles“Was not able to get keys out of the ignition switch. The keys would stick, and I was not able to remove the keys. Took it to a Chevrolet dealership, and they had to replace the shifter and knob assembly. I am the original owner of the vehicle and used the original keys. Furthermore, this car had low mileage, 56,040 miles, for a seven year old car, and was barely driven to have to have such a serious repair. …”
NHTSA complaint #10690718, filed 2015-02, 56,040 miles“My 2003 chevy Malibu would shut off if I hit even a small bump. If I hit a bump while driving, everything would go dead. Fortunately I was able to avoid accidents when this happened as it happened on both surface streets and the highway. Had this looked at by my mechanic and they determined that the ignition switch failed, causing the engine to shut off. No recall yet on this vehicle. Paid for out of pocket.”
