Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“The front end of my truck began shaking at 50 MPH. Tires were checked by the dealer and nothing wrong was found. Tire pressure was 32 PSI. About two weeks later the right rear tire exploded at 67 MPH on the interstate causing me to swerve across two lanes. The tire tread came completely off of the tire causing 2500.00 dollars in damage to the vehicle. The tire was sent to the manufacturer and I was told the failure was due to the tire being cut, and no damages would be paid. The tire was sent back to me and I reconstructed the tire and could not find any evidence of a cut. …”

NHTSA complaint #10166617, filed 2006-08

“While driving on the highway traveling 60mph, went around a curve and the right front tire blew out. Contacted dealer. They discovered that the tire was rubbing against frame which caused the problem. Dealer welded blocks onto the frame, but now the vehicle does not turn correctly, and pulls to one side. Manufacturer denies that there is a problem.”

NHTSA complaint #858255, filed 2000-03

“The tires on this heavy duty 4 wheel-drive truck are light weight tires. While driving vehicle a branch punctured the tire due to the thin sidewall. Also, while driving under rugged conditions the front driver side tire rolled off of the rim. Dealer has been contacted.”

NHTSA complaint #850953, filed 1999-10

“While driving about 60 MPH right rear started making a flapping noise. Then, found out that tire had a tread separation. Cp265/75r16. Consumer still hold the demage tire. Firestone wilderness at p265/75/r15”

NHTSA complaint #868155, filed 2000-08

“Front tires were rubbing against the t-frame. Dealer notified, and informed consumer that this was normal, and there was no reason to be alarmed of a safety issue. Feel free to provide further details.”
