“I bought a 06 monster 620 dark back in feb 06. The dealer I bought it from is closed. Had the bike serviced only by the original dealer when it was serviced. The bike has 3600 miles on so I go to work on it to just clean it up and change the oil and I can't get the tank to latch. So I go on line to look for a fix and start finding the issues about the tank expansion.”
NHTSA complaint #10386598, filed 2011-03, 3,604 miles“My motorcycle has a plastic gas tank which has begun to expand. The outside dimensions of the tank have increased and it now does not sit correctly in the frame, the handlebars hit it on turning, and it presses against the ignition switch. Previously it opened and closed without problems, now I have to wedge it against the ignition switch to close it. The rubber mounts no longer sit on the frame.”
NHTSA complaint #10357277, filed 2010-09, 15,000 miles“Ducati gas tank expanded to the point that it can no longer be removed from the vehicle to service it. Apparently a common problem and will eventually lead to a leak around the fuel pump housing. Potential fire/safety issue when that happens. Have read that ethanol in the gas is the cause of the deformation of the tank.”
NHTSA complaint #10346943, filed 2010-08, 10,800 miles“This Ducati motorcycle is equipped with a plastic gas tank that deformed leading to leaking at the fuel pump area. Leaking of fuel is dangerous due to the proximity of the motorcycle fuel tank to engine exhaust which is hot enough to cause a fire if in contact with fuel.”
NHTSA complaint #10370054, filed 2010-12, 15,000 miles“Fuel leaking from fuel pump area due to expanding/warping plastic fuel tank. Brand new o-ring gasket plus additional hylomar seal did not help prevent the leak. Vehicle is now at manufacturer authorized shop as of 4/10/2010.”
