“I have a Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 2017. The braking system creates a howling sound when the brake is applied. It happened intermittently. I sent my car to the Hyundai dealer near me three times. The problem was not resolved. According to the dealer technicians, they were informed by Hyundai, the manufacturer that the sound was normal. I am concerned about the safety of driving the car. I hope NHTSA can help me to resolve this issue. Thank you.”
NHTSA complaint #11152307, filed 2018-11, 25,900 miles“While driving on the highway, a notice was shown on the dashboard that the hybrid system and cruise control system were no longer functional. The vehicle then started to accelerate, uphill, without the gas pedal being engaged. The vehicle was taken off the highway and when coming to a near complete stop the vehicle stopped working completely. After restarting the vehicle and driving it to a safe place to park a notice indicated the breaks were no longer functional. The car was subsequently towed. …”
NHTSA complaint #11287127, filed 2019-12, 39,000 miles“While traveling 40 mph, car flashes a warning, Check Hybrid System , and then the car shuts off. No power steering and brakes are difficult. The warning is only 3-5 seconds before everything shuts down. This is definitely a hazard to myself and others. If in traffic at higher speeds, there would certainly be an accident with devastating results.”

The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to a Kia dealer for oil change and brake fluid flush; however, upon test driving the vehicle after the service, the brake pedal was depressed but went to the floorboard, and the vehicle responded with a significant delay. The Kia dealer was notified of the failure, but the vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure persisted while driving. There was no warning light illuminated. Additionally, the contact stated that the Kia dealer had diagnosed that the parking brake was inoperable. …”
