“2002 Hyundai Sonata failed at 6 MPH turning a city street corner. The axle and ball joint fell off, taking the right front wheel with it. This car was 'repaired' a few years earlier when it was recalled for undercarriage rust. They sprayed a rubberized coating on the undercarriage, and told me I was good to go! We all know, there is no way to stop rust.”

NHTSA complaint #10449359, filed 2012-02, 104,000 miles

“The vehicle started making a noise and driving weird. It looked like one tire was pointed straight and the other tire turned slightly. I stopped at a gas station to see what was wrong and they said the a frame was almost rusted into. I had already had the metal in the rear of the car replaced from being rusted out near were the shock attaches. I have researched and seen where several sonatas have been recalled due to severe rust issues. The body even has been rusting badly. The bigger concern is the frame. I am afraid to drive it now. Do not know what recourse I have. …”

NHTSA complaint #10871455, filed 2016-05, 151,946 miles

“My son was driving the vehicle at 45 MPH and heard a loud pop in the right front end of the vehicle and immediately afterwards the vehicle veered of to the right and on to the side of the road he was able to maintain control somewhat but if there had been pedestrians in that area I am not sure there would have not been serious consequences, the car was driven slowly to the nearest Hyundai dealer for assessment and after assessment the dealer stated that the sub-frame has rusted out to the point that the right front wheel could become detached thereby possibly causing a potential catastrophic…”

NHTSA complaint #10468761, filed 2012-08, 165,000 miles

“I backed out of the driveway and the subframe on the passenger side collapsed and the tie rod and cv joint came loose. The steering went out. A certified frame mechanic said the sub frame rusted out.”

NHTSA complaint #10723711, filed 2015-06, 81,000 miles

“Factory installed hub caps turn on wheels with acceleration and braking, causing pressure on tire valve stems. This leads to piercing of tire valve stem and rapid deflation of tire. Hub caps have jagged edges on hub cap where contact is made with tire valve stem. There is no mechanism to prevent the hub caps from moving.”
