“Air bag light will not go off, dealership said it was the passenger seat belt receiver, which I replaced with a new part, airbag light is still on and now I am told it is the passenger seat pressure sensor. I saw there have been recalls but was told my car was not included. I am unable to inspect the car in the state of maine now.”

NHTSA complaint #10981439, filed 2017-04, 115,000 miles

“My 2008 Hyundai Sonata was parked in my driveway on november 24, 2013 at around 11 am. I opened my trunk with the remote key and the trunk opened up so fast, the hinge tops on both sides that support and guide the trunk lid broke off at the top. Just disintegrated. These are defectively manufactured plastic caps/covers on the two hydraulic hinges.”

NHTSA complaint #10553671, filed 2013-11, 93,678 miles

“Approximately 3 months ago I tried starting my car (with no previous warnings that this would happen) and it would not start, the engine would not turn over, there was no sound (although I did have power through the battery as I had lights, the lights worked, radio etc) -- I called my father and he suggested that I put the car in neutral and try starting it which it started right away at that time. …”

NHTSA complaint #10618862, filed 2014-08, 72,000 miles

“Car will not start. It's not battery related. I've found several complaints from Sonata owners of model years 2006-08. People have come to find out that it's ignition switch related. My car was parked, it has a brand new battery in it.”

NHTSA complaint #11052099, filed 2017-12, 86,000 miles

“Trunk was opening on its own intermittantly. This was our 55000 mile scheduled service so we reported it. They checked and found nothing wrong but told us they greased the trunk latch and it should be fixed. A few weeks later it is happening again. We think its an electronic defect, but by the time they figure it out we'll be out of warranty. We don't dare put anything of value in the car.”
