Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“I had opened the trunk on my Lexus sl-430 to place some personal items for transport. I was leaning down when suddenly the trunk lid came crashing down with the corner of the trunk striking me in the area around the eye and the upper cheek bone. The injury resulted in bruising and swelling around the eye and has resulted in continuing pain, swelling and discomfort in the eye, ear and cheek bone. After the incident the trunk was inspected by me and other company personnel and it was discovered that the hydraulic trunk struts necessary for the safe operation of the trunk had both failed. …”

NHTSA complaint #10178801, filed 2007-01, 35,820 miles

“Rear door latch failed and the door no longer closes. Dealer said the plastic latch deteriorated and needs to be replaced with a new one but there is no service bulletin on it. Looks like a safety issue why the door latch is made from plastic and the door can actually open while in motion.”

NHTSA complaint #10291628, filed 2009-11, 125,000 miles

“Suddenly the drivers door does not open from inside. While inside the car I have to roll down the window and open the door with outside handle.the car has not been in any accidents.”

NHTSA complaint #10257067, filed 2009-01, 76,000 miles

“On my 2001 Lexus ls 430 the trunk struts do not support the trunk very well at all. The trunk is difficult to open and closes on your head almost every single time.”

NHTSA complaint #10233548, filed 2008-07, 97,000 miles

“Lift supports unable to support trunk. In 2006 Lexus las vegas, nv quoted us $750.00 to fix the problem. Found the cost prohibitive and decided to make do with propping-up trunk with wooden stick each time we open. We are a retired couple in our late sixties, we find the propping-up physically taxing and clearly a safety issue. Yesterday, were it not for my wife's fast reflex, her head would have seriously smashed when a gust of wind slammed the propped-up trunk.”
