“While driving at highway speeds, the engine completely died, suddenly and without any warning. The tachometer reading went to zero and there was no power. I was able to pull to side of road and car was towed. I was informed that the ignitor in the distributor had failed and needed to be replaced. The cost was $523. 00. I've heard that other Mazda's have had this problem, and that ford, which owns 1/3 of Mazda and built this car in flat rock, mi, has been sued in cal. For the same problem with ford vehicles.”
NHTSA complaint #707858, filed 1999-06“All of the locking mecahnisms on the car fail. The door locks don't work all of the time. At times when you try to shut the door with lock flipped to lock, the door won't close. Thr trunk won't open with a master or secondary key, nor by the interior trunk switch. This poses a hazard because we have 2 small kids, let alone we can't retrieve anything from the trunk or lock the car. All parts are original and we contacted Mazda of knoxville, tn and they were going to charge us approx. $500. No damage has ever been done to the car and it is a defect in the locking mechanisms. …”

Updated 01/04/17 the consumer stated he called another dealer and the vehicle was repaired in 20 minutes. Updated 03/08/17.”
NHTSA complaint #10927492, filed 2016-11“It seems as if the entire electrical system and engine valves are faulty. I have seen many TSB's about all related problems...it does not look like Mazda is taking care of the problems!”
