“On my 1995 Mazda MX-6, with 67,000 miles, the transmission has started behaving erratically. When you put it in drive, it doesn't engage immediately, then eventually engages suddenly with a lurch. I have read on-line that this particular transmission is known to be troublesome. Btw, date is 2003, the form isn't updated yet.”

NHTSA complaint #10000777, filed 2003-01, 67,000 miles

“The automatic transaxle went out at 70,000 miles, I was told it was the front forward clutch and the torque converter. After doing extensive research I have discovered that there has been a huge number of mazdas that have failed transmissions at or near 70,000 miles. Total cost of a re-build: $1,500.”

NHTSA complaint #716097, filed 1999-12

“The transmission will reve up/accelerate while driving the car. The RPM's will increase and decrease and it seems the engine is kicking into neutral. It does this at any speed at any time. I have taken the car to the Mazda dealer twice and they have no idea what is going on. If it is not doing the reveing up at the time it is on the diagnotic machine, then they say they do not know what is going on and can not fix the problem.”

NHTSA complaint #710335, filed 1999-08

“Possible transmission failure causing vehicle to jump out of gear which resulted in vehicle running of the road. Later that day, vehicle started leaking oil & began to smoke. This failure could result in a fire.”

NHTSA complaint #852587, filed 1999-11

“The contact owns a 1995 Mazda MX-6. While driving 70 MPH, the vehicle began jerking and failed to move forward or backwards. When in reverse, it would jerk backwards. The contact stated that this failure has occurred on six different occasions. The purchase date, powertrain, and mileage information were unknown.”
