“Exaust manifold ) in this vehicle as well as the maxima and pathfinder have been redesigned. However , the problem with earlier year vehicles has not been addressed. I know of 6 other owners that have had this same problem. I was advised by the dealer that the replacement bolts were much stronger. They lasted 10,000 miles. This is a well cared for vehicle in like new condition. Photos of the replacement of the manifold bolts at the dealership are available and can be provided in pdf format for your viewing. …”

NHTSA complaint #724842, filed 2000-07

“Right side of exhaust manifold leaking. Two studs broken off. Checked right side and found one broken stud, not leaking yet. I talked with two dealers, a parts distributor, and a owner of a 1989 pathfinder (same engine) and they all confirmed that this was a typical problem with this engine. I had the exhauset gaskets and studs replaced on both sides. ($ 856.75) this vehicle has been very well maintained and there is no reason why the exhaust studs should be failing at only 70,000+ miles. The service writer informed me that they replaced the studs with new & improved studs. …”

NHTSA complaint #711699, filed 1999-09

“Timing belt slack adjuster pivot bolt backed out hitting the guide when caused the timing chain to break also causing damage to the valve and valve plate.”
