“I'm transit mechanic 30 years, proir coast gaurd DOT, keep tires inflated 35lbs at all times, check often, rotate 5-7 thousand miles, largest load ever carried less than 300 lbs-mulch for yard, vehicle unloaded at time of tire separation. It would appear that the other three tires are on the verge of seperation. I have parked vehicle until I hear from NHTSA.”

NHTSA complaint #764115, filed 2002-07

“Two tires have an unusual bulge on the inside about 0.25 in wide, 0.125 in tall, running across from rim to rim. I believe this was the source of the incredible grinding noises. I thought the brakes were bad, so I had them rebuilt, but the only way to eliminate the noise and dragging effects was to replace the tires. (DOT number: st3231 tiresize: p215/70r14)”

NHTSA complaint #735698, filed 2000-11

“Received notice from goodyear tire & rubber company that certain p215/70r14 douglas etra-trac a/w it produced have experienced adverse service conditions that have LED to tread area separation. In there letter I was directed to go to the nearest wal-mart retail outlet to see if I qualified for the free replacement. I qualified. My vehicle was pulled into the bay, the tires were replace, and I was then presented with a bill of $118.00 for the new tires. It was then that they told me that they prorate the old tires and gave me a small discount for tire ware. …”

NHTSA complaint #10217419, filed 2008-02

“I had purchased a set of seventeen inch centerline rims, and have had nothing but problems. The manufacturing process didnt identify the centerpiece which protrudes and applies pressure to the valve stem causing it to eventually shear off and rapidly flatten my tire. Since Im running low profile tires with the rims it is hard to identify flat tires until hitting something that feels solid. Ive had two shear off so far and have spent hundreds in tires and wheel repairs or replacement but still more is needed to remove numerous dents that even when repaired wont look like they did before. …”

NHTSA complaint #765697, filed 2002-08

“Pe00020; firestone atx tire tread separation: while driving about 45 MPH, tread on rear driver's side tire came off. Driver was able to control vehicle, and was not injured. Tire size p23575r14, original tire equipment on a 1997, Nissan, pickup truck. Tire mileage was 25,000. Firestone was contacted about the tire. Firestone claimed no responsibility. Owner replaced all four tires with tires made by cooper. There was damage to the vehicle due to tread separation.”
