What NHTSA recorded

Vehicle description: trucks. An incorrect grade 5 flange-nut was installed in place of a grade 8 nut and flat washer on the yoke pinch bolt that holds the connection between the lower end of the I-shaft and the steering gear.

Possible consequence

If the pinch bolt nut experiences thread stripping, the yoke connection of the steering shaft to the steering gear box could fail and possibly result in loss of steering control.

Remedy

Dealers will replace the grade 5 pinch bolt nut with the correct grade 8 nut and washer on all vehicles. Owner notification began december 17, 2001. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact international at 1-800-448-7825.
