“About 1 month ago, I began to notice a thumping noise coming from what I thought was my front passenger tire. I began to try to establish the pattern of the noise and verified that it primarily occurs at low speeds of 20-25mph or high speeds of 50-55 MPH when I apply the brakes. I took my car into Saturn dealership 9/18/04 to have it 'checked out'. The mechanic diagnosed that I either had a failing wheel-bearing or I needed to replace my tires. The mechanic assured me that there was not immanent danger of driving the car. …”
NHTSA complaint #10093324, filed 2004-09, 43,000 miles“While driving between 35 to 40 MPH front passenger's tire blew out. Two weeks later, the front driver's side blew out at the same speed. Firestone, affinity. Both tires have been replaced.”
NHTSA complaint #10060930, filed 2004-03, 9,500 miles“The contact owns a 2003 Saturn ION. The vehicle has firestone infiniti tires, size 195/60r15 (na). On three isolated events, within a five week period, the valve stem on the tires failed. The tires lost pressure overnight on two occasions. During the most recent failure, while driving 55 MPH, the tire lost complete pressure and the contact nearly lost control of the vehicle. He still has possession of one of the tires. The dealer stated that they would not be responsible because they were not the manufacturers. The failure and current mileages were 48,000. Updated 07/15/08 updated7/15/08.”
