“Throttle control module had to be replaced due to check engine light coming on and the car stopped several times on the highway and I finally called aaa to tow me from bedford ky which is approximately 46 miles to louisville ky where I live and where I purchased the car. The dealer charged me $403.88 which was suppose to be half of the cost. This was done 7/6/04 and I purchased the car 1/3/04.”
NHTSA complaint #10131006, filed 2005-08, 53,687 miles“While driving our 2000 Volvo v70 xc, the throttle began acting strange, requiring us to press much more than usual on the throttle to avoid the engine cutting out, while pulling out into traffic. The car was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a faulty electronic throttle module, and I was told it would be covered under an extended warranty. The part was ordered, and in early january 2010, I returned to the dealer for installation. The car has been getting worse, and we have come very close to having an accident due to the faulty design. …”
NHTSA complaint #10318180, filed 2010-03, 153,129 miles“My 2000 xc v70 Volvo began 'choking' and then stalling one day. I was able to restart the car and get to my destination. Incident date noted below is when the initial problem occurred. However the stalling occurred repeatedly over the next few days, resulting in replacing the throttle, which I now found out is under investigation for possible defect and Volvo knows about it, yet fails to warn it's customers!! The replacement of the throttle was over $1000.”
NHTSA complaint #10143750, filed 2005-11, 54,900 miles“On 7 december 2005, while driving vehicle north on I-94 in massachusetts at a speed of 65 MPH, suddenly the engine hesitated and lost power. Etc light on dashboard illuminated. I was able to take evasive action and pulled over to the side of the highway. Went to the local Volvo dealer in south deerfield mass. To have the car examined. Dealer stated that they cleaned the etm and cleared fault codes. Drove the car back home (upper marlboro,md) on the evening of 8 december. Along the route home the car repeatedly hesitated. …”
NHTSA complaint #10144997, filed 2005-12, 40,989 miles“During highway driving, the car began to surge and buck. I was unable to maintain a consistent speed. I pulled off the highway and turned off the ignition and restarted. Same problem resumed with ets (electronic throttle system) dash warning light illuminated. Currently I am unable to accurately control the throttle via foot pedal. I have just visited the borton Volvo dealership and the service manager informed me that this is a common problem affecting volvos 1999-2001 requiring replacement of etcs ( electronic throttle control system) module at $1000.00+.”
