“When leaving doctor's office and turning right onto busy 4-lane highway car accelerated from creeping speed to full throttle. When I applied the brakes, they made a terrible sound and went clear to the floor before stopping. I was scared to death and could have been killed. NHTSA complaint #10008560, filed 2002-11, 1,600 miles

“I drove my 02 chevy Cavalier on thursday back from tahoe,ca and my gas pedal got stuck down and kept increasing in speed, so I prayed and then started to mess with my cruise control and finally came back up, this morning same thing happened, so I called Chevrolet customer service and the rep-eric told me that I need to pay for a diagnoses before I can get any answers, he called up the closest dealer and they could not give him a quote, I would rather buy a new car if I have to pay money for a diagnoses. This incident is a mechanical problem which occurs on its own. …”

NHTSA complaint #10372599, filed 2010-12, 171,000 miles

“I bought this car a 2002 chevy Cavalier in 2005, and at the time there was 25k original miles so I was told. Since then I have found out there has been 5 recalls on this car for various safety hazards, none of which I was ever told about prior or during my purchase of this vehicle. The signals have failed, I had to pay for them to be replaced, the bearings on the tires caused dry rot and I had to pay to replace those, both were on the recall list. The engine would over heat in the idle position, and they replaced an air filter sitting that as the problem and it wasn't. …”

NHTSA complaint #10315340, filed 2010-03, 77,115 miles

“Engine and vehicle speed sometimes, but intermittently, do not respond to driver control - vehicle accelerates on its own. When that happens, had to ride brakes to control speed. This happened five times with increasing severity over a period of time - on the sixth time the vehicle reached 60mph without the accelerator being touched. Review of odi compliants shows an increasing number of similar related complaints on this model with age. Had purchased car to give to my newly licensed daughter, who, due to lack of experience, was initially unsure if the problem was with her or the car. …”

NHTSA complaint #10025959, filed 2003-07, 5,424 miles

“While traveling on interstate I-75 at approx 75-78 MPH with my car's cruise control set, I changed lanes to go around a slower vehicle at which time I was also coming up to a vehicle in the lane I switched to so when I tapped my brake pedal to release the cruise control it did not disengage, so I rapidly starting pushing the button on the end of the cruise control mechanism which did not slow me down either-I turned the button of on the cruise control it did not shut off! …”
