“My truck started to take longer to get it to start after taking it to my local dealership it was found to be the fuel pressure relief valve on the fuel pump was leaking back into the fuel tank this was no surprise because when the symptoms first started I investigated the problem on some Dakota groups on the internet and found it to be a common problem for quite a few years. You would think Dodge would fix the problem but then again they charge $442 for a fuel pump so where is the incentive.”
NHTSA complaint #10086655, filed 2004-08, 40,000 miles“Abs & brake light and check engine light came on on our 2001 Dodge Dakota quad cab with 43,000 miles. Took to norwin Dodge for service. They found that the differential (rear end) was completely ruined. Since vehicle was out of warrently our out of pocket expense was in excess of $1,600.00. Also said that engine light was due to a moderate evaporation leak and replaced gas cap. The transmission of this vehicle also had to be replaced after only 4000 miles!(fortunately this was covered under warrenty), but a complete transmission replaced after only 4000 miles? …”
NHTSA complaint #10130145, filed 2005-07, 43,155 miles“There are no injuries that I know of yet but I believe there could be. I'm a mechanical designer for an engineering firm and an avid car enthusiast. The problem is in Dodge magnum engine 5.9l fuel rails I''m not sure what all years/models/engines this type of rail is used in but mine is a 2001 Dakota 5.9l I believe it''s the same for Dodge ram and Dodge durango. The problem is on the fuel rail there is a test port where a mechanic can test fuel pressure if there is a fuel problem. Where the port is attached to the rail (by brazing I think) seems to leak fuel. …”
NHTSA complaint #10005250, filed 2003-02, 10,000 miles“My 2001 Dodge Dakota has a faulty SKIM system. The vehicle goes into No-Start/Stall while driving down the road. I have had it at a dealership and they do not have technical experience with these older vehicles that require an “antiquated software system”. This is a dangerous situation, particularly in foothills with winding roads.”
NHTSA complaint #11680211, filed 2025-08“2001 Dodge Dakota slipped out of park into reverse gear and was circling out of control. The vehicle eventually struck a concrete median and stopped. The driveshaft and other parts under the vehicle were damaged. This wasn't the first time the gear selector jumped out of gear. This vehicle was previously taken to maroone/Dodge service center to have the transmission checked where it sat to this day. Consumer stated it was a mechanical problem since they complained about this. They haven't obtained no information on their vehicle since it was towed to the repair shop. …”
