“Transfer fuel pump has been replaced 3 times under warranty, now 140,000 miles the cummins engine needs another pump, has left me stranded beside the road two different occasions. Also 5th gear had to be replaced, I understand this is another problem Dodge has with the nv4500 transmission.”
NHTSA complaint #10047361, filed 2003-11, 140,000 miles“1999 Dodge cummins diesel engine; poor design of lift pump and injection pump leads to a variety of failures on 1998.5 through 2002 year models. Engine will not accelerate particularly when cold. When leaving stop sign or light, accelerator can be pumped, etc. But engine remains at idle. Many owners experience this problem. Injection pump - vp44 made by robert bosch. Engine by cummins. Truck by Dodge. Won't let my 17 year old drive this vehicle for fear he will do a normal take off and will be broadsided by other traffic when engine does not respond. …”
