Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“Put kids in car seats. Got in driver's seat and closed door and side airbags deployed. Ford is acting like this is the first time it's ever happened but I see lots of complaints about it online. Nothing done, so far. Waiting to see if it is covered on insurance. Local Ford dealership believes vehicle is totaled because they cannot put air bags back in and guarantee safety afterwards.”

NHTSA complaint #10892610, filed 2016-08, 83,000 miles

“The contact owns a 2005 fort Explorer Sport Trac. While driving 50 MPH during a storm, the vehicle began to hydroplane and collided with a tree. The air bags did not deploy. The contact experienced minor pain in various areas of his body, but did not receive medical attention. The vehicle was towed to a wrecking yard. A police report was filed. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was notified. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was 160,000.”

NHTSA complaint #10715390, filed 2015-05, 160,000 miles

“The contact owns a 2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. The contact was driving 35 MPH when the front side curtain air bags independently deployed followed by a loud, unusual noise. The front driver and passenger seat belts became inoperable after the air bags deployment. The dealer advised that the air bags deployed because the vehicle detected a crash. The contact was not involved in a crash and there was no external damage to the vehicle to indicate that the air bags should have deployed. The dealer was unable to provide a reason as to why the air bags deployed. …”

NHTSA complaint #10350719, filed 2010-08, 57,000 miles

“The contact owns a 2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. When the contact attempted to close the driver side door, all of the side curtain air bags deployed except for the steering wheel air bag. The contact did not notice any differences in the vehicle prior to the failure. The manufacturer would not diagnose the vehicle because the contact cut the air bags out of the vehicle to see if the vehicle could be driven to his residence. The current and failure mileages were 34,592. Updated 09/16/08. The consumer stated he removed the air bags. Updated 09/18/08”
