“My front differential started to seize up while driving on a major highway. My car would made a grunting noise and slowed to almost a complete stop, good thing it was early morning and the traffic was not heavy. A car or truck could of easily ran into my bumper causing me serious injury or death. I called the repair place right away and they got me in immediately. The diagnosis was the front differential needs to be replaced.”

NHTSA complaint #10259828, filed 2009-02, 143,000 miles

“Our envoy service engine soon light came on and then our envoy would not go past second gear. We took to Gmc and was told that the transmission had to be replaced. They stated that the upper coolant line had been touching catalytic converter and caused all fluid to leak out causing the transmission to fail . We saw no fluids in driveway or smelled any strange odors.”

NHTSA complaint #10119689, filed 2005-05, 48,000 miles

“I smelled something burning after I parked my 2003 Gmc Envoy Xl in the garage. After inspecting, noticed transmission fluid leaking on ground. Towed to mechanic. Told transmission cooler hose was laying next to catalytic converter - not secured. Heat from cc rubbed hole in tc hose and therefore could have ignited vehicle. Since I had parked in the garage, it also could have burned my other vehicle and our house. Mechanic replaced hose and secured. …”

NHTSA complaint #10172693, filed 2006-11, 79,000 miles

“After having several problems with my 2003 Gmc Envoy Xl such as broken window, 4 wd broken, and many other problems I noticed a humming noise. Took it into the dealership to be serviced along with a bad switch in the driver's side door panel and was told the front differential is bad. It is being fixed now, but was told by several other mechanics that this sort of thing shouldn't happen to a new car and generally the differential should last the lifetime of the vehicle.”

NHTSA complaint #10184275, filed 2007-03, 56,000 miles

“My 2003 envoy with 68,000 was rear ended. Shortly after the accident I began to hear a cluncking noise when stopping. After I took the vehicle in to be repaired I was informed that it no longer would go in reverse. The problem appears to be the sunshell gear which seems to be a common failure with this transmission, because even though it was fine before the accident the dealer is claiming it was not caused by the accident and thus I am responsible for the estimated $2,500 to fix!”
