“On december 14,2012 I was traveling north up a hill at 35 MPH when suddenly they car accelerated to 55 MPH. I tried to stop but the cars tires screeched and hit the ladies car in front of me. Thank god no one was injured. The front end is toast. I have to have the car examined and find out why it accelerated out of control and did not stop. The car is a total loss.”

NHTSA complaint #10721633, filed 2015-05, 126,100 miles

“On friday, september 28, 2012 at approximately 9:30am I was pulling into a parking spot at the heb grocery store on i45 at 646 in league city, tx when the engine on my 2001 Hyundai Elantra revved and roared very loudly and surged into the pickup truck parked in the opposite spot. At the time I did not have my foot on either the gas pedal or brake. I stomped on the brake but nothing happened-it just kept revving and surging forward. I shoved the stick into park and luckily it stopped. …”

NHTSA complaint #10478211, filed 2012-10, 55,045 miles

“Headlights burning out frequently was the first sign of problems, replaced them as the dealer said this was inherent to the 2001 Elantra. In august 2006 check engine light came on. Also, the air bag sensor light was on, headlight out again, took car to dealer, they called back and said that the alternator had been over charging and not only was the over charging burning out the headlights it also had taken out the cruise control module, and air bag module. Car had only 42000 miles on it, and was 2 weeks from being out of the 5 year bumper to bumper warranty. …”

NHTSA complaint #10188009, filed 2007-04, 40,000 miles

“While traveling in traffic on the long island expressway, the gas pedal was released and it returned to its raised position by its spring. However, the accelerator cable did not release causing the vehicle to continue accelerating. With both feet on the brake pedal trying to stop the car, it still impacted the vehicle ahead. Subsequent to the accident, the sticking of the accelerator cable could be replicated intermittently. By tapping and redepressing the gas pedal to the floor the cable would release. At this time, the damage to the car has prevented investigation under the hood. …”
