Example complaints

Engine cooling: “My 2002 Kia Rio Cinco's timing-belt broke and caused serious damage to the engine resulting in a $2500 fee to fix the vehicle. Because my timing-belt was not changed at 60000 (we have 61000 miles on the vehicle) they would not honor their warranty. I have done research on these vehicles and a lot of people have had problems with these vehicles.”

Fuel system: “Dt: the contact stated while husband was driving the check engine light illuminated. Less than one minute later there was black smoke coming from under the hood. He got out of the vehicle and saw that the vehicle was on fire. The fire department was called to extinguish the fire. The vehicle was towed and has not been inspected at this time. This vehicle was repaired under NHTSA recall campaign 04v179000 in october of 2004 for the fuel distributor and fuel tube assemmblies.”

NHTSA complaint #10144610, filed 2005-12, 57,000 miles

Air bags: “While driving, the consumer lost control of the vehicle. When the driver tried correct the vehicle and come back onto the highway , the vehicle almost crashed into the concrete barrier. To avoid crashing into the barrier the driver made a hard turn and over corrected. This resulted in the vehicle going off the edge of the black top into the bottom of a ditch and rolled over 3 times. Upon impact none of the frontal air bags deployed. The roof caved in about a foot on the passenger side. The driver sustained bruises to his left leg, neck pain and slight blurred vision. …”

NHTSA complaint #10092243, filed 2004-09, 40,000 miles

Electrical system: “Approximately 1.5 years ago I was having a problem with the car hesitating on the highway and the check engine light coming on. I brought my car to the Kia dealership (hamilton, on) for diagnosis and they diagnosed the problem as being the mass airflow sensor. I had them replace the sensor (250$cad) and do a 300$ tune up on the car. Two days later the check engine light came back on and I brought in back to the dealer. By the time I had the car at the dealer the light had gone off and they said to bring it back when it was on. …”
