Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“Went to the dealer for oil change & tire rotation. Service department told me they could not do the tire rotation due to the fact they could not remove the lug nuts. They wanted me to buy new lug nuts at a cost of $334.00. I declined, decided to research on my own to replace. Hopefully I don’t have to worry about a wheel falling off.”

NHTSA complaint #11492978, filed 2022-11

“My Car has swollen lug nuts . I was informed of this by a Dealer who refused to remove the nuts to rotate the tires . I expressed a concern that I had a flat would the lug wrench remove nuts . I was told probably not. I travel long distances . This possibly means I could be stranded for an extended time due to a known fact. I have replaced the nuts but believe I should have been notified earlier by Lincoln .”

NHTSA complaint #11553018, filed 2023-11

“Brought vehicle into the dealer for tire rotation service. They said they could not take my wheels off the car because the lug nuts have become swollen. This is a common condition where the chromed metal lug nut covers become separated from the lug nuts and expand such that the lug nut socket no longer fits. This means that I can't remove a wheel to fix a flat on the road which become a real hazard.”

NHTSA complaint #11459743, filed 2022-04

“Told by Diamond Ford in Lancaster CA that my Lug Nuts need to be replaced at the cost of $225.00. I have been driving for 60 years and Never had to replace Lug Nuts.”

NHTSA complaint #11574530, filed 2024-02

“The contact owns a 2016 Lincoln MKX. The contact stated that while the vehicle was at the dealer for routine maintenance, the dealer informed the contact that the lug nuts needed to be replaced due to the lug nut edges being rounded. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact had safety concerns if the vehicle had a flat tire in a rural area or in cold weather conditions where the lug nuts could not be removed with a lug wrench to replace a flat tire. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 20,963.”

NHTSA complaint #11443824, filed 2021-12, 20,963 miles
