What owners report

Owners of this model year report problems with the automatic motorized shoulder belt far more than anything else, with complaints spread across many years of ownership. Other reports involve stalling or cutting out while driving, charging system failures, and occasional cooling system problems. Many complaints come from cars with well over 100,000 miles, though belt failures are also described at lower mileage.

  1. Seat belts

Automatic shoulder belt won't move or retract

    • 24 complaints (32%)
    • median 95,000 mi at 18.5 yrs old (5 state mileage, few)
    • 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 1995–2017

Owners describe the motorized shoulder belt stopping partway along its track when the door is opened or the ignition is turned on, so the belt no longer reaches the driver or passenger. Others report the belt staying tight or failing to release, sometimes requiring the emergency release or being disconnected to get out. Complaints also describe a broken motor or cable inside the track, and repairs quoted by dealers in the hundreds of dollars; some owners say the dealer declined assistance because of vehicle age or mileage. Reported from around 31,000 miles into the 200,000s, with many complaints filed on cars over 90,000 miles and a few described as happening soon after purchase.

What to check: Open and close both doors and watch whether each shoulder belt travels its full path and parks where it should; check that the belt retracts and that the emergency release works. Ask whether the belt motor or track assembly has been replaced.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“The driver's side automatic shoulder harness will only roll back about 1/3 of the way then stops. The problem seems to be exactly the same in description as that of a recall (campaign number 97v211000 on the Mazda 323 built that same year. The seat belt motor and track assembly costs $600 at the dealer which seems totally outrageous. I am filing this report in the hope that my car year and model could be added to that recall. Thank you very much.”

    NHTSA complaint #736677, filed 2000-11

“Driver side shoulder strap is broken. It moves on a motorized track and the motor doesn't work so the strap is stuck more than half way towards the windshield. Mazda won't fix it without payment because of my mileage is beyond extended warranties. This has nothing to do with mileage. They want $720.00 to fix the shoulder strap, $590.00 just for a new motor. I have a fix-it ticket on this strap and cannot affored to pay their price to have a shoulder strap that moves up and down as I open and close my car door. …”

    NHTSA complaint #751786, filed 2001-09
  2. Seat belts

Shoulder belt fails to lock or hold in a crash

    • 10 complaints (14%)
    • median 40,000 mi at 12.4 yrs old (1 states mileage, few)
    • 2 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 1995–2017

Some complaints describe the shoulder belt not staying snug or not locking during emergency braking or a collision, and one owner reports the belt releasing on its own while driving at highway speed. Another report describes the belt tightening on its own after a sudden stop until it has to be unbuckled. In several cases dealers replaced the belt assemblies after confirming they would not stay locked. Reported across a wide mileage range, including cars under 95,000 miles and some within the first years of ownership.

What to check: With the car parked, pull sharply on each belt to confirm the locking retractor engages, and check that the buckle latches and releases cleanly. Ask whether any belt assembly has been replaced under warranty.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“While driving seat belt light flashes and beeps, but when leaning forward it shuts off. Was in a rearended accident on 3-15-2000, and the seat belt failed to release. Also, when opening the door seat belt will not release or slide forward. Will have to manually release it in order to get out of the seat belt. When driving 60mph the seat belt will automatically release, slide forward and backward without touching the brakes.”

    NHTSA complaint #858651, filed 2000-03

“Issue with seat belts in 1994 Mazda Protege lx. At times, front seat belts continue to tighten when foot is lifted from brake pedal after a sudden stop. It gets so tight that belt has to be unbuckled. It is a scary situation and not very safe.”

    NHTSA complaint #10151689, filed 2006-03
  3. Electrical system

Engine stalls or cuts out while slowing or driving

    • 5 complaints (7%)
    • typically at 5.0 yrs old
    • filed 1995–2000

Owners describe the engine quitting without warning, often while slowing to a stop, and restarting readily afterward. One complaint describes the car dying at speed and then repeatedly cutting in and out along with dimming headlights and slow wipers, with alternator and battery replacements not resolving it. In several cases dealers reportedly could not reproduce or identify the cause. Complaints span a broad mileage range, with several filed on cars at or above 90,000 miles.

    Recall 15V674000

What to check: Ask about any history of stalling or no-start episodes and whether the ignition switch has been replaced under the ignition switch recall. Have a mechanic check charging system output and inspect the ignition switch.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“I was an hour away from home when my headlights started going dim, and windshield wipers wouldn't work on high speed. After the car died we went and got a new alternator and put on it, after that, it drove for about 5 miles and the headlights started going dim and the car would cut in and out. The next day we put a new battery on it and I drove it home, when we took it to a shop, they rebuilt the alternator, and I drove the car for a few days and it started doing the same thing all over again. …”

    NHTSA complaint #703319, filed 1999-02

“Engine surges when vehicle stops. Vehicle taken to dealer, but unable to find the problem. . The defect has reoccurred again in early sept. 2000, dlr has not been able to duplicate defect. The vehicle will surge foward far enough to hit vehicle in front.”

    NHTSA complaint #856511, filed 2000-02

Buying note. The automatic shoulder belt system is the main thing to inspect on this model year, since it accounts for most owner complaints and repairs are expensive; test the full travel, retract and lock function of both belts. Also confirm whether the ignition switch recall work was completed and check the axles and CV boots on any high-mileage example.

Summary written with AI from a sample of 39 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. The excerpts come from NHTSA's public complaint records and are unverified; capitalisation is normalised, NHTSA staff notes are removed, and shortened text ends with “…”. Something wrong?
