What owners report

Owners of this model year most often describe cooling-system trouble — coolant loss, overheating and related engine damage — plus fuel-system leaks that in several accounts led to engine-compartment fires. Many cooling reports appear very early in the car's life, while fuel and fire reports are spread widely, sometimes appearing in the first few tens of thousands of miles.

  1. Engine cooling

    Engine coolant loss and overheating

    • 13 complaints (16%)
    • median 10,800 mi at 11.0 yrs old (1 states mileage, few)
    • 2 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 1995–2003

Owners describe coolant disappearing from the engine or the overflow bottle not drawing coolant back when the engine cools, leaving a puddle under the car and a low level at the next start. Some report repeated overheating while driving, and several say overheating led to engine damage or engine replacement. Complaints also mention dealers declining cooling-system recall work on certain cars, with owners stating their car was not covered by the campaign. Many reports come in below roughly 30,000 miles, and overheating is described across a wide range of ages and mileages.

    Recall 94V0940001 related service bulletin

What to check: Check coolant level and look for staining or residue on top of the engine, and ask for documentation of cooling-system recall completion (campaign 94V094000) for this specific car.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“Recall site shows 3 recalls for 93 Mazda rx7. Engine cooling system recall says manufactured from dec 1991 to jan 1994 . My rx7 was manu feb 1992 and I feel should be included in this recall. Mazda however states that there is only 2 recalls on my car. This is my 2nd rx7. The first one I had was manufactured march 1992, one month after this current one. It was exact same car. It was recalled for all 3 showing in the recall database. So what do I do? Mazda says the cooling system is not a recall item for my car. I disagree. …”

    NHTSA complaint #708676, filed 1999-07

“The consumer received a recall NHTSA#94-v-094-000 on may 1997 on the radiator cap pressure relief valve. The release pressure was set too high which could cause the coolant to reach temperatures that exceed thermal design limits of some components of the coolant system. Should this occur the engine coolant could leak directly on top of the engine. The consumer stated this recall failed. The recall was partially completed. …”

    NHTSA complaint #10040629, filed 2003-12, 10,800 miles
  2. Fuel system

    Fuel leaks and engine-compartment fires

    • 15 complaints (18%)
    • median 89,000 mi at 10.2 yrs old (3 state mileage, few)
    • 9 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 1995–2007

Complaints describe a strong gasoline smell while driving or after parking, sometimes followed by smoke and flames from the rear of the engine bay. Mechanics cited in the reports point to fuel lines, the pulsation damper and injector area leaking onto hot engine parts. Several owners say the leak persisted even after fuel lines, injectors or recall work were addressed, and some report the dealer could not find the source of the odor. Reported from the mid-1990s onward at a wide spread of mileages, including cars with under 50,000 miles and others past 100,000.

    Recall 95V069000

What to check: Ask whether fuel-hose recall 95V069000 was completed and with what parts; before buying, check for a fuel smell at cold start and after a drive, and have the fuel lines and pulsation damper inspected.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“I noticed white smoke coming into the car while driving to work. I stopped the car right away and opened the hood to see the back of the engine on fire. I put the fire out with a fire extinguisher and had the car towed to a Mazda rotary engine specialist. I was informed by the mechanic that the fire was a result of the faulty factory fuel line and the fuel injection system, which are a well known problem by Mazda mechanics. The mechanic told me that these fires happen quite frequently in 1993-1996 RX-7's as well as in the prior body style. …”

    NHTSA complaint #770498, filed 2002-12

“Fuel pustation dampner spontaneously failed and began spraying a 6 stream of fuel under the upper intake manifold. Thank god I noticed the smell or this would have been a very nasty engine fire. The fuel leaks down from the fpd and runs off onto the turbo assembly. Scc ***dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis***770788”

    NHTSA complaint #10006667, filed 2002-12, 135,000 miles
  3. Engine cooling

Stalling, rough running and power loss

    • 11 complaints (13%)
    • typically at 4.8 yrs old
    • 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 1996–2000

Complaints describe the engine cutting out or running rough, most noticeably with the air conditioning on, and stalling at idle, at stop signs or in stop-and-go traffic. Owners also report bucking and jerking at steady speeds. Several say the car went to the dealer repeatedly, and some were told the engine needed replacement after losing compression. Reported across a broad range of mileages in the late 1990s, often after multiple dealer visits over a few months.

What to check: Drive the car with the air conditioning on and at low speed in traffic, and ask whether the idle control and engine computer have been serviced or replaced.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“While driving the vehicle with A/C on the vehicle stalls at idle/stalls at stop signs and in stop & go traffic, and is low on power. Vehicle has been taken to dealer (5) times within a (2) month period. Dealer is not able to correct problem. The vehicle needs a new motor, Mazda has offered to provide a motor if I pay for installation.”

    NHTSA complaint #816074, filed 1997-09

“Vehicle experiences intermittent stalling/clutch slipping/jerking/bucking even after turbo was replaced/driver's and passenger's door handles loosened/clunking noise when window comes down/glove box opens unexpectedly/middle console material peels off and squeaking noise from under hood.”

    NHTSA complaint #534890, filed 1998-04
  4. Electrical system

Engine fires near battery and alternator wiring

    • 9 complaints (11%)
    • median 71,250 mi at 13.2 yrs old (2 state mileage, few)
    • 5 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 1996–2006

Owners report smoke and flames from under the hood while the car is parked or idling, and in some cases after the engine ran rough. Inspection by dealers or insurance investigators in several accounts traced the origin to the area around the battery and alternator wiring; one owner describes battery acid leaking onto the cooling-fan motor below it. Some cars were totaled. Reported at low to moderate mileages, including examples around 36,000 and 50,000 miles, with several occurring shortly after a drive or while parked.

    3 related service bulletins

What to check: Inspect the battery tray, cables and the cooling-fan area below the battery for acid residue or corroded wiring, and ask whether the battery and its hold-down have been replaced.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“Leaking battery acid causes a short in a cooling fan motor located directly below the battery causes fires in 1993 and older model Mazda rx-7s. This will not show in a fire investigation, as the insulation will be burned away. This can explain the multiple fires in parked, cool vehicles.”

    NHTSA complaint #546744, filed 1997-02

“Drove vehicle about 3 miles, engine began running rough. Went back home and cut vehicle off, saw smoke and raised the hood and fire was coming from underneath the hood of vehicle.”

    NHTSA complaint #815261, filed 1997-08
  5. Engine cooling

Rotary engine wear, oil use and compression loss

Mentioned in 4 of 42 sampled complaints

Some owners describe the engine consuming oil steadily and losing compression, with mechanics attributing it to internal rotary-engine wear such as a seal failure. Accounts mention engine replacement more than once, and one owner reports an oil line to the turbo collapsing and flooding the intercoolers with oil. Costs described in the complaints are substantial. Mentions cluster in the 30,000 to 45,000 mile range in some accounts, with others reported at higher mileage.

What to check: Ask for a compression test from a rotary-experienced shop and for service records on engine replacement or rebuild; check oil level and consumption over a few hundred miles.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“Oil line to turbo's collapsed causing the inner coolers to be flooded with oil. This was caused by the apex seal coming off in the rotary tube which caused the compression levels to drop. This damage costs me in excess $10000 and happened at 30000 miles. An investigation is currently under way.”

    NHTSA complaint #10018854, filed 2003-05, 31,000 miles

“The engine had and overheating problem which lead to excessive heat deteriorating the engine seals, a new engine was installed, the new engine developed an oil leak, the consumer requests reimbursement. Nlm”

    NHTSA complaint #560419, filed 2001-03

Buying note. This model year draws frequent cooling, fuel and electrical-fire reports, so a pre-purchase inspection by a shop familiar with the rotary engine is worthwhile. Confirm which open recalls and bulletins apply to the specific car, and budget for cooling-system and fuel-line attention.

Summary written with AI from a sample of 42 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. The excerpts come from NHTSA's public complaint records and are unverified; capitalisation is normalised, NHTSA staff notes are removed, and shortened text ends with “…”. Something wrong?
