Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“I own an ml 430 mercedes benz 1999. The transmission failed with only 116,000 miles on it. I called mbusa and they refused to offer goodwill in assisting with repair. The cost of repair is over $5,000.00. The owner's manual states that the ML430 supposedly has a permanent fill of automatic transmission fluid so regular checks and changes are not required and for this reason the dipstick has been omitted. How can the consumer be responsible for this if we cannot perform maintenance on the part? (consumer also reports a ruptured brake line and a problem with the catalytic converter. )”

NHTSA complaint #10031122, filed 2003-08, 116,000 miles

“While driving at 65 MPH brake system seized. Consumer examined the vehicle and found that the brake pads melted. Also, ABS pump unit needed to be replaced.”

NHTSA complaint #10073871, filed 2004-05, 51,000 miles
