“Both front coil springs broke, springs rubbed into tires on both sides making it hard to steer ruining both tires, surprised that the tires on both sides were not punctured due to the springs. Dealer informed me that fractures in the front coil springs has been a problem for the Sable, would have hated to have this happen at a greater speed or I am afraid the results could have been a lot worse than two ruined tires”

NHTSA complaint #704041, filed 1999-03

“The contact owns a 1992 Mercury Sable. When the contact took his vehicle to a local mechanic, corrosion was discovered in the steering column. He also discovered that he was experiencing the same failure listed in NHTSA campaign id number 98v323000 (structure:frame and members). The manufacturer was unable to provide assistance; however, they stated that because it had exceeded ten years, the parts were unavailable. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 85,591. Updated 10/16/08. The vehicle would pull to the side. Updated 10/17/08.”

NHTSA complaint #10240898, filed 2008-09, 85,591 miles

“The contact owns a 1992 Mercury Sable. While driving approximately 30 MPH, the contact heard a loud thumping noise. Approximately thirty seconds later, the vehicle shut off. He pushed the vehicle to the side of the road and noticed that the front frame failed. Two days later, the vehicle was towed to aaa. A local mechanic arrived a week later and stated that there was wear and tear on the front frame bushing sway bar, which caused the front frame to fail. He notified the manufacturer and they stated that there was a recall for the rear frame, but not the front. …”

NHTSA complaint #10204862, filed 2007-10, 100,000 miles

“The problem is that the speed sensitive steering oscilates between low-effort & high-effort when driving through a curve. Makes vehicle tricky to control. Also exhibits intermittent pulling to either side that has not been eliminated by thorough front-end maintenance. Others with like vehicles report same problems.”

NHTSA complaint #723784, filed 2000-06
