“I got in my car started to drive and heard something snap then smoke came from the hood and the car pulled hard right. I immediately stopped and parked the car. The coil spring broke and dug into my front passenger tire and it pulled the axle out of the cv joint.I was in allentown,pa. On a main road in the city. Feb.8,2020.”

NHTSA complaint #11321890, filed 2020-04, 130,000 miles

“My mechanic noticed that the rear spring was worn. This, he said, was cause for a recall in the front spring in 2005. However, there was no similar recall for rear spring. My mechanic said this part should not have worn out like this.”

NHTSA complaint #10627658, filed 2014-08, 108,401 miles

“While backing car from lawn onto driveway (not a significant incline), I heard a loud noise. Later when I drove the car I heard a continuous noise from the rear (thought something broke in the brake assembly but discovered spring rubbing on tire). The repair shop inspected and found a broken rear spring. They replaced both springs (unclear if 1 or both were broken).”

NHTSA complaint #10244447, filed 2008-10, 111,788 miles

“A loud bang from the rear of my 2001 Mercury Sable. I removed one of the rear tires and found that the rear spring had broke on the drivers side. It had a sharp edge on it that could puncture the rear tire. The front springs had a recall done on them. Why are the rear springs not covered under this recall?”

NHTSA complaint #10224339, filed 2008-04, 88,000 miles

“Heard a loud bang in rear of vehicle while driving. Further inspection revealed a broken driver's side rear spring. I then found out there was a dealer recall on the front springs due to them breaking prematurely, but no recall on the rear spring. I will have to replace rear strut and spring.”

NHTSA complaint #10191437, filed 2007-05, 86,957 miles
