Example complaints

Electrical system: “On 12/2/11 thermostat housing sensor failed and replace on 1/18/12 second one failed. On 2/27/12 noticed oil leak. Informed that the solenoid leaking to engine is currently being replaced.”

NHTSA complaint #10449473, filed 2012-02, 10,000 miles

Engine: “The 2011 Mini Cooper Countryman has a poorly designed cup holder that punctures cups causing liquid to leak. This cup holder is not properly sealed and allows fluid (condensation) into the gearshift assembly. This causes the inability to shift gears properly. It will also cause the key to be stuck in the ignition. Mini will not take responsibility for the labor to fix the issue and will also not correct the problem from recurring. I believe this is a safety issue and needs to be investigated as well as a very expensive fix for the consumer. …”

NHTSA complaint #10546491, filed 2013-10, 20,000 miles

Engine cooling: “I was driving about 25mph when I saw smoke coming from under the hood. I pulled over and popped the hood and found flames in the engine bay. I didn't have an extinguisher in the car and there wasn't a hose in sight, so it burned for a few mins before a bystander stopped and gave me an extinguisher. The fire department came shortly after and doused the still smoldering engine compartment with water. There were no warning lights on in the dashboard before, during or after this fire. …”

NHTSA complaint #10439348, filed 2011-12, 5,700 miles

Steering: “Bought 2011 Mini countryman s in 6-2011. I turned vehicle on in the morning (11-5-2011 at 730am) to drive to work. Vehicle had been parked outside on my driveway. No issues driving the vehicle on the previous day. No vehicle warning lights or alarms came on. After putting car in reverse attempted to back out of driveway onto the street and noticed that I was unable to turn the steering wheel to back out. Required extreme amount of force to turn the steering wheel in any direction. I was able to drive to work (approximately 6 miles) on surface streets but had very limited steering ability. …”
