Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“I am an older gal with no car...my daughter gave me her car so I could take my 95 year old mom around. One day the airbag light came on. I took it in and the man said it would be $700.00. I don't have any extra money. Today I saw the takata airbag recall on television. I called toyota..they said mine was not on the list. Just because it wasn't on the recall list....who is to say this airbag on this Scion is not takatas fault too. …”

NHTSA complaint #11144983, filed 2018-11, 166,000 miles

“The airbag light comes on after driving a few miles. Car taken to dealer and I was told it was the electrical cable inside the steering column that had failed . This is the part that controls airbag deployment. I asked if the company (toyota) would assist with the replacement, and was told no. Some just fail. That's part of owning a car. The part is on order, and the repair is going to cost $530 - $300 for the part, $100 labor and $130 for the diagnosis. …”

NHTSA complaint #10713612, filed 2015-04, 14,020 miles

“Airbag indicator light has been on for a few years. Vehicle has never been in an accident. Was told dealership wouldn't cover to repair & that I must've been involved in an accident & that as long as the light is on that my airbags would not deploy if in a wreck. What a shame since I did pay extra for side curtain airbags when vehicle bought. Can't remember if car was moving when light came on. Love this car. Has 230k + miles but after reading other comments on same issue I will be considering something other than toyota for next vehicle”

NHTSA complaint #10854221, filed 2016-04, 100,000 miles

“On september 9, 2015 after starting the car at a store - the airbag light (srs light) came on and stayed on . The owners manual said to contact toyota immediately or take the car in to a dealer. I called stevinson toyota/Scion in aurora, co where the car was purchased 10 years ago. The first available service appointment was in two days on 9/11/15. The service representative said that the only problem might be if I got into an accident and the air bag might not deploy but this did not alleviate my concerns so I did not drive unless necessary. …”

NHTSA complaint #10764647, filed 2015-09, 117,920 miles

“Airbag did not deploy during a head-on collision. My car was traveling at 40 MPH when struck by a 1/2 ton pickup truck coming from the opposite direction. I sustained a severe neck strain(whip lash).”
