Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“Purchased vehicle brand new with 18 miles on it. I get it serviced like clockwork and have never missed a maintenance appointment. A little over a week ago, the electrical locking system on the drivers side door stopped functioning. Toyota is telling me that there are no recalls and it will cost me almost $1000.00 to repair. Now, the electric locking system for the passenger side door is not working and Toyota is still saying it is nothing they can do because there is no recall and the vehicle is no longer under warranty. This is not acceptable. …”

NHTSA complaint #11372555, filed 2020-11, 55,110 miles

“Vehicle was being driven on beltway and suddenly lost all power, braking, and steering capabilities. Emergency brake was used to stop vehicle. Vehicle was not able to be restarted. Phone attached via cigarette outlet was zapped. Manufacturer has failed to assume any responsibility customer has endured due to this total vehicle malfunction.”

“Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2018 Toyota 4Runner. The contact discovered that there was a mileage discrepancy per a Carfax report. The vehicle was a dealer sale. At the time of the purchase, the vehicle mileage was 65,862. However, the Carfax report indicated that the mileage was 61,000 in April 2022; 90,000 in February 2023; and 54,000 towards the end of the month in February 2023. The contact stated that the current approximate mileage was 86,000.”

NHTSA complaint #11750896, filed 2026-07, 86,000 miles

“Apparently rodents have gone to the engine and ate the soy wires to the harness. This in turn has cost me over $1000 to fix. The only warning was when the warning lights came on and four runner started to shake when started.”
