“My husband, an 84 year old, was driving the car and got into a double accident. First, he was parked in a parking lot and he got in the car and backed up. As he backed up he hit a vehicle parked behind him causing that vehicle to hit two other vehicles. (please note: we are still waiting for full police report for information as to exactly how far he would have backed, but I believe not much more than 1 to 2 car lengths.) this car had the Toyota care package installed, which included the safe backing features to slow a vehicle when backing and another object is blocking the path. …”

NHTSA complaint #11241658, filed 2019-08, 2,370 miles

“Ever since, I purchase my certified 2019 Toyota Avalon in around June 2022, my car has left me stranded on highways, city areas, and broke down coming out of my garage. I even purchase extended warranty, because of the high mileage it had 77,000 miles. …”

NHTSA complaint #11749408, filed 2026-07

“On two occasions, 8 months apart, our car started braking on its own while driving in traffic. In both instances, the on-screen alerts indicated the LDA and simultaneously the check engine light. Neither time were we trying to switch lanes. In fact, the first time we were on a one-way street. In both instances, we were able to cruise over to a parking space before the car completely stopped avoiding a rear-end collision. Once we got in the space, we turned the car off and back on but it would not go forward or backward. We sat for 30 minutes or so, started it up and was able to get it home. …”

NHTSA complaint #11760763, filed 2026-08

“This incident has happened twice in three years. Hence it is a very rare occurrence. Both times involved the same events. Cruise control was on. I was traveling in the left lane of the interstate highway, approaching an 18-wheel truck which was in the right lane. When I was approximately 50 feet from the rear of the truck, the truck began to enter my lane. I suspect I was in the trucker's blind spot. My car did not sense the truck. The cruise control did not disengage. The brakes did not engage. But the MOST troublesome was that the car did not respond to my pressing on the brake pedal. …”

NHTSA complaint #11417486, filed 2021-05

“The contact owns a 2019 Toyota Avalon. The contact stated while driving approximately 65 MPH, the parking brake malfunction warning flashed. The contact proceeded to his destination and shifted the vehicle into park (P) but did not engage the parking brake for fear that it might not disengage. …”
