“I bought my 2006 Prius in october of 2012 and ever since buying it I've noticed that the headlight on the driver's side goes out by itself. I actually went into the dealer within a week and told them my headlight was out but when I got there and I turned them on it was working. I was baffled. They didn't say a thing to me that this was a commonly reported problem that Toyota wasn't going to be addressing. Anyway, I left and the headlight problem has been happening ever since. …”
NHTSA complaint #10552120, filed 2013-11, 45,000 miles“When closing the rear hatch on my 2006 Toyota Prius, the inside rear view mirror came crashing down, taking a chunk of the windshield with it. My car now is missing a piece of windshield and the mirror. Contacted Toyota--they said since the car had too many miles on it and was off warranty, they wouldn't fix it, although they agreed it shouldn't have happened. To me, it seems to be a manufacturing/materials defect that Toyota is not willing to admit. The mileage is irrelevant for this type of defect--it can happen at any time.”
NHTSA complaint #10295346, filed 2009-12, 74,192 miles“My 2006 Toyota Prius has a problem with headlights going out intermittently. Toyota says they replaced lights after we insisted there was a problem. They noted problem was caused by a short that they say nothing about fixing. It took 2 visits to get problem resolved due to intermittent nature. I think this is a defect and dangerous. They need to address this problem. There are numerous postings on web of this and all indications are that lights and control modules have problems. I am writing to national center for dispute settlement, but think odi needs to step in. Thanks.”
NHTSA complaint #10280703, filed 2009-08, 26,344 miles“Hid lights turn off independent of vibration, heat, duration of time on. Occasionally both turn off at the same time. Turning brights has no affect. Turning lights off and then back on fixes the problem. Dealership has replaced entire headlight assembly, computer, and bulbs and then began to re-occur after 10,000 miles.”
NHTSA complaint #10255897, filed 2009-01, 32,000 miles“When driving at night, the dashboard displays some of the dashboard on the front windshield, which causes you to avoid that area of your windshield. This is a defect in all 2006-2009 Toyota Prius cars. What happens is that you start looking at this reflection and it creates a safety concern. You also do not have a clear view through the reflection. It is extremely distracting. When you are on a country rode late at night, where there may not be any street lights, it is even worse. This problem was fixed in the 2010 models and beyond with a longer edge on the dashboard at the top. …”
