What owners report

Complaints on this model year are dominated by infotainment screen failures, brake noise and vibration, and hesitant or delayed transmission and throttle response, with backup camera problems close behind. Most describe cars under 20,000 miles, often within the first months of ownership, and owners frequently report that dealers called the symptoms normal or could not reproduce them.

  1. Brakes

    Brake grinding, squealing and vibration

    • 22 complaints (13%)
    • typically at 1.5 yrs old
    • filed 2024–2026

Owners report grinding, squealing and shuddering when braking, most noticeable when the brakes are cold or on downhill grades, and sometimes a pulsating pedal. Inspections have found scored or heat-spotted rotors, and one complaint describes pad material separating from the backing plates at low mileage. Complaints commonly state the dealer described the noise as normal for the vehicle or cleaned the brakes without resolving it; some mention being offered partial help with ceramic pads. Mostly reported from a few thousand miles up to around 25,000 miles, often first noticed in cold conditions or on long descents.

Recall 25V434000Recall 24V7230002 related service bulletins

What to check: Test the brakes cold and warm on a downhill stretch and listen for grinding or squeal; ask for the rotor and pad measurements and whether any rotor resurfacing or pad replacement has been done.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“Bought a new 2024 VW Atlas Se with 4 miles on it. Around 6700 miles my brakes grinds and squeaks whenever I brake when the pads are cold. Took it to the VW dealership in Capitol Heights, MD. They claimed they cleaned the brakes but the same problem is occurring. From researching the problem it seems many people are having this same problem. VW should be aware of the issues.”

    NHTSA complaint #11634041, filed 2025-01

“The brakes sound horrible when they are cold. They grind and vibrate until they are warmed up and the car only has 8K miles on it. We are being forced to pay to have the brake pads replaced with ceramic brake pads from the semi-metallic factory ones. We have only had the car 2 weeks. They said VW would cover 70% of the cost, but with the number of complaints, this should be covered completely.”

    NHTSA complaint #11650823, filed 2025-03
  2. Transmission and drivetrain

Delay or no response when accelerating

    • 55 complaints (31%)
    • median 15,327 mi at 1.3 yrs old (7 state mileage, few)
    • 3 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • owner-quoted repair $700 (median of 5 quotes)
    • filed 2023–2026

Owners describe pressing the accelerator and getting a delayed or absent response, sometimes with the engine revving high before the car moves, and complain the transmission holds a low gear or slips into neutral. Some say the issue appeared right after purchase and was raised with the dealer early. Complaints mention dealers replacing a shifter or telling owners the behaviour could not be reproduced, and in some cases the vehicle was towed. Widely reported between roughly 4,000 and 20,000 miles, often in stop-and-go or turning situations.

    Recall 23V5930002 related service bulletins

What to check: Drive from a stop and at low speed through a turn, watching for hesitation or a delayed downshift; ask whether any transmission software updates, shifter replacement or diagnostics have been performed.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“I was driving approximately 72 - 74 mph on an expressway and approaching traffic ahead of me. To move around this traffic, I switched lanes and attempted to accelerate. Immediately upon pressing the accelerator, the vehicle began to sputter, jerk, and decelerate, and the engine revved at what sounded like a very high rate of RPMs. The vehicle continued to sputter and jerk as it decelerated to a speed of approximately 55 – 58 mph. …”

    NHTSA complaint #11589690, filed 2024-05

“I was driving about 75 mph when my car alerted me that the engine had stopped and I needed to pull over immediately. The wheels continued to turn and the car was stuck in neutral. I pulled over and tried to push the SOS button which did not connect. I then tried to restart my car and it started but would not shift out of neutral. I called the police for help and my brand new car had to be towed. The tires then froze up after being put on the tow truck and would not release- even though the car was in neutral. …”

    NHTSA complaint #11618750, filed 2024-10
  3. Electrical system

Infotainment screen goes black or freezes

    • 40 complaints (23%)
    • median 18,000 mi at 1.6 yrs old (3 state mileage, few)
    • 3 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2024–2026

Owners describe the central touchscreen going black, pixelated or unresponsive, sometimes while driving. Because climate, defroster, radio, phone and camera functions run through that display, the screen failure takes them down too. Complaints say screens were replaced, sometimes more than once, and the problem returned; an over-the-air update is also mentioned as the point when the system stopped working. Several report the dealer had no fix or told them not to bring the car in unless the fault was present. Reported across the sample from the first months of ownership up to about two years, with no clear mileage pattern.

    Recall 26V473000Recall 25V334000Recall 24V4800004 related service bulletins

What to check: Start the car, cycle through climate, radio and camera screens, and confirm the display stays lit; ask whether any software or over-the-air updates have been applied and whether a screen has already been replaced.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“I was driving on the freeway in the right lane and the lane assist forced my steering wheel to turn right causing me to collide into a concrete guard rail. Previous to that my car had been having electrical malfunctioning issues with the screen and radio.”

    NHTSA complaint #11691464, filed 2025-10

“The rear camera of our vehicle has been intermittently failing for the past year. The VW dealer has not been able to repair as it is an intermittent issue. Today the entire screen wouldn't turn on to even be able to control the HVAC system, and it was a cold day. Luckily the rear has separate controls so my kids weren't freezing in the car. I was going to take it to the dealer today, but the screen started working again and the service advisor said not to bring it in if it's not broken. …”

    NHTSA complaint #11703644, filed 2025-12
  4. Forward collision avoidance

Adaptive cruise and front assist disengaging

    • 17 complaints (10%)
    • typically at 1.3 yrs old
    • 2 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2024–2026

Owners report adaptive cruise control switching off on its own at highway speed and front assist warnings or automatic braking that engages with nothing ahead. One complaint describes braking activation several times in a short distance in rain; another says the lane assist pulled the wheel. Complaints state dealers could not reproduce the fault or said no fix was available yet. Reported at highway speeds and in rain or darkness, mostly within the first year of ownership.

    1 related service bulletin

What to check: Ask to test adaptive cruise and front assist on a highway stretch, check for stored driver-assist fault codes, and confirm the camera module software is current.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“I was told by dealership that due to the boosters transmitting radio frequencies in rural areas that it interferes with the adaptive cruise control. I have gone on 3 trips where this causes the front assist and cruise control to disengage at highway speeds. Had someone been behind me they would have rear-ended my vehicle. In 6 months has happened three times but the dealership has not been able to reproduce due to our high population in our area. Dealership is aware but they don't know how to fix as manufacturer hasn't released any information. …”

    NHTSA complaint #11573517, filed 2024-02

“The braking system and driver assist feature (“Maneuver Braking Function”) on my 2024 Volkswagen Atlas have repeatedly malfunctioned. The vehicle displays the warning message “Maneuver Braking Function Currently Not Available,” accompanied by loud grinding and mechanical noises when braking. The issue began shortly after purchase and has persisted despite three separate service visits to Volkswagen of Wesley Chapel. …”

  5. Back-over prevention (rear camera)

Rearview camera blank, flickering or distorted

    • 20 complaints (11%)
    • median 18,000 mi at 1.6 yrs old (1 states mileage, few)
    • filed 2024–2026

Complaints describe a backup camera image that flickers, goes black or shows a distorted picture, in some cases from the day the car was bought. Several owners state the fix was not resolved after recall work or screen replacement, and one notes the camera does not come on when pulling into a space, only after selecting reverse. Dealers are described as unable to reproduce the intermittent fault. Reported from near-new onward, including after recall software work, at mileages up to about 18,000.

What to check: Shift into reverse several times and check the image for flicker or distortion; confirm in the recall history that the rear visibility camera recalls were completed.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“The backup camera stopped working on March 19. Because the car is less than a year old, we thought it was a minor glitch and would go away on its own. On March 20, the backup camera was still not working. On March 21, with the backup camera still not working, we contacted the dealership to schedule an appointment to diagnose and fix it but the next available appointment isn't until June (three months from now). …”

    NHTSA complaint #11578809, filed 2024-03

“the backup camera has had a flicker/black screen issue since the car was purchased. after recall 24V480000 was applied to the vehicle, the flickering, black screen and no image issues persisted with the backup camera. dealership says software is up to date and this site shows the recall was applied to the vehicle.”

    NHTSA complaint #11723864, filed 2026-03

Buying note. Check that all open recalls for the rear camera, brakes and engine cover have been completed on the specific vehicle, and test the touchscreen, backup camera, brakes and low-speed acceleration on a test drive. These complaints cluster at low mileage, so a full service history and a pre-purchase inspection are worth the cost.

Summary written with AI from a sample of 60 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. Example complaints

Electrical system: “My foot was completely on the brake pedal during a low-speed parking maneuver, and the vehicle, un-commanded, surged forward, causing the crash. The vehicle actively fought my braking. Also the crash assist did not engage nor stop the vehicle either , I was directly in front of the car I collided with.”

NHTSA complaint #11773436, filed 2026-10

Brakes: “The brakes are extremely squeaky and it terrible grinding sound whenever I braked. It sounds like water going back and forth under the car. I have taken it to the dealership multiple times. I requested a test drive of the vehicle. Their response is yes, vehicle was driven. its the same noises my coworkers have with their own atlas.”

NHTSA complaint #11700610, filed 2025-11

Other or unknown: “The windshield seems to be made of poor quality. Drives city roads , and the same roads and conditions that i drive my other teo cars but tgis 2024Atlas chipped in tow times alrrady in amonth and this time had a 7-8 icnh crack with a very small chip. This looks unusual mostly caused by low stabdard windshield or issue with how it’s installed.”

NHTSA complaint #11634006, filed 2025-01

Engine: “Safety recall issued in November 2025 for the engine cover. The dealership removed the faulty engine cover for safety reasons. VW customer care informed me that the part is not in production. Under federal recall law, manufacturers must provide a remedy within a reasonable time . Seven months with no production date for the repair is my complaint. The engine cover is designed to reduce engine noise.”
