“I have a 2001.5 Volkswagen Passat. When the car was under warranty (around 15,000 miles), the seatbelt mechanism was retracting very slowly so I took it in to be repaired, which they did do at no charge. The car is now out of warranty and I'm again having the same problem. I called the dealer and they said it could be repaired at my cost. Is this considered a safety issue and should they repair it at no charge?”

NHTSA complaint #10005595, filed 2003-02, 26,000 miles

“The rear middle seat belt on the car got stuck (or locked). No accident or misuse of the equipment happened. It happened when I was reinstalling my child seat. Now, I am unable to install the child seat. It is a big safety issue and I recommend the government have the manufacturer fix it. There are several other complaints about this incident that I could find when searching on the internet. Not sure if they have officially been reported to the government. Please feel free to reach me if you need more information.”

NHTSA complaint #10263858, filed 2009-04, 81,000 miles

“2001 Volkswagen Passat notice to manufacturer, memorandum of facts and request for compensation. (nar). After the vehicle was returned tot he consumer after service, the consumer noticed that the front passengers side seat belt was inoperable. A month later the vehicle's engine stalled while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who determined that the #4 coil failed.”

NHTSA complaint #10073317, filed 2004-05

“Brakes problems - less than a year old, if drive 40 MPH and up, and if the brake pedal is applied, the vehicle would accelerate for a brief second before it decelerates (very scary and dangerous). Four years old: ABS lights on and if the brake pedal is applied, the vehicle would shaking. Reported to Volkswagen, but no cares has taken. Seat belts problems: two and half years old: front passenger seat belt doesn't recoil.”
