“The timing chain (not the timing belt, which had been changed well before the recommended time) broke. This caused the engine to seize immediate resulting in the car coming to a rapid and abrupt stop. Fortunately for me, it occurred at low speed on a very quiet street. Had it occurred on a freeway, serious injury or death likely would have resulted since the car decelerated so quickly I would not have had time to coast into the breakdown lane. …”

NHTSA complaint #10428250, filed 2011-10, 100,412 miles

“I purchased certified pre owned car from dealership-Audi A4 3.0 quattro, 2005. 2 days later I could not pass required state inspection due to check engine issue-misfire on a 6th cylinder. I brought the car back to dealership a few days later to correct the problem. The problem was corrected temporarily and car passed the inspection-'check engine' light was reset by dealership. A few months later check engine issue came back after scheduled maintenance (at 50,000 miles) was done by authorized dealership. Problem was temporarily corrected 2nd time. …”

NHTSA complaint #10260748, filed 2009-03, 50,000 miles

“2005 Audi A4 avant is currently still under warranty but the Audi dealership and Audi of america will not replace a cracked coolant reservoir. The onboard computer came on, indicating a problem, but there was no leak. However, the crack was very visible and will most likely spread further resulting in a leak. The crack was most likely caused from the excessive heat under the engine hood. I believe this was a serious flaw in materials used to manufacture the reservoir.”

NHTSA complaint #10195343, filed 2007-07, 40,900 miles

“The contact owns a 2005 Audi A4. While driving 2-5 MPH in reverse, the vehicle would not accelerate and the engine warning indicator light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the coil that distributes spark to the cylinders degenerated and lost power. The dealer replaced four ignition coils. The current and failure mileages were 52,000.”

NHTSA complaint #10217081, filed 2008-02, 52,000 miles

“The contact owns a 2005 Audi A4. The contact received a notice stating that the vehicle was running on three cylinders. The dealer stated that there was no reason for concern and that the vehicle would be fine. The dealer replaced the engine coil in order to reduce the amount of gasoline that was being used. Three months later the turbo failed and the engine malfunctioned. There were no warning lights illuminated when the failure occurred. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 62000.”
