What owners report

Owners of this 2004 330Ci most often file complaints about the Takata air bag recalls, frequently because parts were unavailable and the repair could not be completed. The other recurring themes are a cold-start transmission engagement delay in automatic cars (often reported within the first few thousand miles) and an intermittent rough idle or stalling at stops. Electrical, lighting and fuel pump complaints tend to appear on higher-mileage cars.

  1. Air bags

Air bag recalls not completed / parts unavailable

    • 23 complaints (30%)
    • median 67,463 mi at 10.7 yrs old (6 state mileage, few)
    • filed 2009–2016

Many complaints are about the Takata frontal air bag recalls rather than a specific breakdown: owners say they received a notice but were told the replacement inflator or module was not available, sometimes for many months. Some describe being asked to bring the car in for an inspection before parts could be ordered, or being told by one dealer that nothing was known about the recall. A few report an air bag warning light coming on after recall-related work, or that air bags did not deploy in a collision. Reported through the mid-2010s while the recalls were open; mileage varies widely and is often not stated.

What to check: Ask for written confirmation that both the driver and passenger frontal air bag recalls (20V018000 and 15V318000) have been completed on this VIN, and check that no air bag warning light is lit with a passenger in the front seat.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“I brought this vehicle in for the national recall. When I received the car back, the air bag was on for the first time. This dealer refused to fix it. I brought it to another location, which fields also owns, and they wanted to charge me to diagnose this after they screwed it up. What a racket. It specifically states the owner not be charged for this repair.”

    NHTSA complaint #10763427, filed 2015-09, 76,926 miles

“There are 2 open recalls for airbags. Bmw refuses to order parts (even though they sent me a letter) unless I bring the car to a dealer (130 miles round trip) for a 5 minute inspection . They will then order the parts and I will have to return again (another 130 mile round trip) to have the work done. They are nice enough to offer a rental car at $35 a day but can't tell me how long it will take. I believe that Bmw is intentionally creating this inspection obstacle requiring 2 trips to discourage people from having the work done. Shameful.”

  2. Engine cooling

Rough idle and stalling at stops

    • 13 complaints (17%)
    • median 3,100 mi at 0.5 yrs old (11 state mileage)
    • filed 2004–2016

Complaints describe the idle dropping sharply, sometimes below a few hundred rpm, with the engine stalling at stop lights, stop signs or while turning. Some report misfires, a shaking engine and loss of power at speed, with the check engine light coming on. Dealers reportedly reprogrammed engine software, replaced an idle control valve, airflow sensor or crankcase vent parts, but several owners say the rough idle returned. Often reported at low mileage, within the first several thousand miles, and in both cold and warm weather.

What to check: Let the car idle for several minutes at operating temperature and watch for rpm dipping or stumbling; ask for any service history on software updates, idle control or intake parts.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“I have a 6-speed manual transmission 330cic and when I put the gear into neutral at a stop the engine RPM would dip drastically and stalls several times in traffic. Periodically the engine RPM would dip so rapidly that the engine stalls from idle position. This can happen in the driveway or on a road at an 4-way light. Basically anytime the engine is at idle there is a potential for stalling. I experienced stalls in heavy traffic as well as sitting at a stop light.”

    NHTSA complaint #10062056, filed 2004-03, 6,100 miles

“Bmw 330i exhibits frequent erratic idle when stopped, as well as engine stalling. Erratic idle is in the form of engine speed drops below 400-500 RPM. Stalling sometimes occurs as a result of these idle speed drops. This is a common issue among recent 330 model Bmw's, and apparently there is no known solution at this time.”

    NHTSA complaint #10065933, filed 2004-04, 3,010 miles
  3. Exterior lighting

Headlight and tail light wiring / lamp failures

    • 11 complaints (14%)
    • median 117,000 mi at 12.5 yrs old (10 state mileage)
    • 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2012–2019

Owners describe headlight wiring insulation crumbling or chafing near the lamp housing, adaptive headlights that flicker, and headlights or tail lights that stop working or stay on. Some report a turn signal that illuminates on its own or will not switch off. Several owners state they were told their convertible was not covered by the tail light recall. Usually reported on higher-mileage cars, roughly from 35,000 to over 200,000 miles.

    1 related service bulletin

What to check: Inspect the wiring behind each headlight for cracked or bare insulation, and check that every lamp, including turn signals, works and does not stay lit when switched off.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“Headlight wiring on my 2004 Bmw 330CI degraded prematurely accelerated by heat and high voltage until it caused my headlight to fail while driving on the interstate in the early evening. The symptom was caused by the supply wires to the igniter losing there insulation at stressed harness attachment point, arced over, and caused the copper conductors to become brittle. This symptom was seen on the projector assembly wiring as well as the daylight running light which did not exhibit the copper breakdown. …”

    NHTSA complaint #10926533, filed 2016-11, 114,000 miles

“Headlight wiring jackets flaked off. Had the ballast and bulb replaced in passenger side headlight, because the headlight no longer worked. Noticed that the wiring was bare & looked like someone had clipped 2 of the wires. After replacing both the ballast & headlight it still did not work. But a couple of days after, turned on the headlights and now it works again. I know this is not safe, I see where others have had the same issue. Not sure how to get the new wiring for the headlight or does the whole thing need replaced? …”

    NHTSA complaint #10885741, filed 2016-07, 150,000 miles
  4. Transmission and drivetrain

Delayed engagement from reverse to drive when cold

    • 10 complaints (13%)
    • median 3,000 mi at 0.4 yrs old (6 state mileage, few)
    • 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2004–2025

Owners of automatic cars describe a several-second hesitation when shifting from reverse into drive after a cold start, with the car feeling as though it is in neutral and requiring extra throttle to move. Some also mention hard downshifts under braking or revving on quick acceleration. According to complaints, dealers replaced at least one transmission and told other owners there was no fix. Mostly reported on cars with very low mileage, often within the first few thousand miles and on cold morning starts.

What to check: On a cold start, shift from reverse to drive and time how quickly the car takes up drive; ask whether the transmission or its software has been serviced.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“I own a 2004 Bmw 330CI. Driving in reverse out of my garage and driveway first thing in the morning, then shifting to drive when I reach the street, the transmission does not engage until about 3-10 seconds. The car will roll freely during this time as if it were in neutral. I have not had an incident or crash, but fear it is a possibility if this were to occur on a hill or if a car were to approach and I couldn't get out of the way. …”

    NHTSA complaint #10058416, filed 2004-02, 3,000 miles

“Automatic transmission failure - I started my car, let it warm up and moved the shifter to reverse. The vehicle jerked (my glasses flew off my face) and made a rough grinding sound. I moved the shifter back to park and experienced the same grinding sensation and noise. It was towed and dealer said that the 330CI was only using two gears due to the malfunction.”

    NHTSA complaint #10189400, filed 2007-05
  5. Fuel system

Fuel pump failure causing power loss

Mentioned in 4 of 60 sampled complaints

Complaints describe the engine cutting out at highway speed with no warning, sometimes with the gauge reading empty despite fuel in the tank. Owners report the car was towed and the fuel pump replaced at their own expense. Reported in the range of roughly 90,000 to 122,000 miles.

What to check: Ask whether the fuel pump has been replaced and by whom; on a test drive, watch for hesitation or an erratic fuel gauge reading.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“I was driving my 2004 Bmw 330CI when suddenly without any warning my engine stopped working, which resulted in no engine power, no power brakes and no power steering. It was a very dangerous situation. It was towed to the nearest Bmw dealer where the fuel pump was replaced.”

    NHTSA complaint #10303001, filed 2010-01, 91,261 miles

“I was driving on the insterstate and the car lost power and would not start. The car was towed to the dealership and required a new fuel pump which cost $1,135.13. Prior to the problem, the gas mileage decreased although the car had been tuned up by the same dealer. The car had approximately 122,000 miles. A request was made to return the old part.”

    NHTSA complaint #10381165, filed 2011-02, 122,000 miles

Buying note. For this model year, first confirm that the outstanding Takata air bag recalls were completed on the specific VIN, since parts were a common obstacle. A cold-start test drive and a look at the headlight wiring will also surface the two most frequently reported mechanical and electrical themes.

Summary written with AI from a sample of 60 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Knowing the danger my son has been in all of this time has shaken my core comfort zone to dust. I'm now in the process to correct this bad airbag currently in my vehicle. My son's future has been placed in rusk and that will not be left unchecked by means available. I was hit with my son in the car and the bad airbag didn't deploy, thank god!”

Transmission and drivetrain: “I purchased a 330i Bmw in december of 2003. The car has less then 1500 miles on it and has developed a huge problem. In the mornings when the engine is cold, the engine will rev when its in drive and not go into gear. It takes quite a few seconds for it to engage into 'd'. The car will also jerk into 1st gear after it finally starts to drive. I have just taken my brand new Bmw into the dealership for test on it and unbelievable to my ears.....I got a phone call from them saying the whole engine transmission has to be replaced.... …”
