“My wife was driving our 2017 Bmw 430I with our infant son in the back seat. She traveling approximately 70 MPH on the freeway when she heard an explosive sound which resulted in the glass sunroof to shatter. The sunroof was not open, the heat was not on, and there were no vehicles in front/behind, or next to her. No visible evidence of any road debris. It just exploded outward, and no clue as to why.”
NHTSA complaint #11319018, filed 2020-03, 34,100 miles“After putting the hardtop down and receiving the complete message, I then got another message saying 'retractable top not locked'- see owners manual. After reviewing the manual, I could not dismiss the warning or put the top back up. I have been getting this same message whether the top is up or down since purchasing the vehicle and it has been in the shop almost the entire 3 weeks I have owned it! The car was running and in park when the top was initially lowered and received the message the first time.”
NHTSA complaint #11383491, filed 2020-12, 49,997 miles“Friend was driving down freeway. Suddenly heard a loud boom, and the sound of road noise. Pulled off freeway. Found that sunroof had spontaneously shattered. The only reason this didn't hurt the driver was that the sunroof shade was pulled. The dealership (long beach Bmw) claimed that this was a result of an impact. No evidence of something hitting it with enough force to cause this shattering is visible. In fact, the picture shows that the sunroof exploded out when it shattered. (look around the hole and you will see that the sunroof glass was going out.”
NHTSA complaint #11287268, filed 2019-12, 32,300 miles“Plastic oil filter housing part cracked and leaked all my anti freeze out on I 95. This incident caused me to have my car towed 3 times to various dealer and shops for repair. Total cost of this repair was approximately 2K with parts and labor + 300. for towing. No warning from BMW - this could have caused myself and others great harm out there on 95 and if I had to drive farther to find a safe place to pull over it would have destroyed my engine.”
NHTSA complaint #11729155, filed 2026-04“There is a recall on the connector for the year of my vehicle and the BMW Sewell Plano dealership is trying to charge me for the service and repairs. They will not honor the recall.”
