“Takata inflators: my nephew was driving on the highway, when the driver side airbags exploded without warning. Both the door airbag and the curtain airbag exploded.”

NHTSA complaint #11255209, filed 2019-09, 137,000 miles

“BMW just issued a Do Not Drive order for BMW 5 series cars from 2000 to 2006. Our car is a 1999 BMW 528I. According to your safety records, this car also has Takata air bags, but I see no indication these have been recalled. Since they are actually older than the 2000-2006 cars, shouldn't these 1999 Takata air bags be just as dangerous? What should I do about this? Thank you.”

NHTSA complaint #11521084, filed 2023-05

“The contact owns a 1999 Bmw 528I. While making a right turn, the driver's air bag deployed without warning or an impact. The contact sustained eye injuries that required medical attention. The contact was able to coast the vehicle over to the side of the road and called the Bmw manufacturer. The vehicle was towed to an unknown Bmw dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 200,000.”

NHTSA complaint #11175693, filed 2019-02, 200,000 miles

“This Bmw deployed the passenger side air bag, driving down the highway at 70mph. At the same time both front tires went flat. I do not know at this time if the tires were punctured by an object or not. My wife was driving the car and said that she was cruising at 70mph,(8:30am with good visability) when the airbag deployed she pulled over and noticed that she had two flat tires on the front. There was tire failure with this incident, however I only know that the brand tire is dunlop. The car is at the dealership at this time. This so far, is a real mystery to us!!!!!!!”

NHTSA complaint #741843, filed 2001-03

“Consumer was approaching an intersection and another vehicle on other side of street ran stop sign. And collided with consumer's vehicle. Upon impact, driver's side airbag didn't deploy.”

NHTSA complaint #8018842, filed 2002-09
