Example complaints

Fuel system: “When I was stopped at an intersection I noticed a very strong fuel smell coming from my motorcycle. I looked for liquid fuel leaking to the ground but found none. I was very near home, so I returned and removed the body panels to examine the fuel system. I found fuel leaking from the fuel tank/pump cap down onto the top of the engine and alternator. I removed the tank and examined the fuel pump assembly and found multiple cracks radiating outward from the pump outlet connector. …”

NHTSA complaint #10556210, filed 2013-12, 29,180 miles

Brakes: “While demonstrating the ABS braking system on motorcycles for a number of motorcycle safety instructors (in a parking lot,) I had ridden within 5 minutes a handful of successful ABS demo runs. I was starting at one side of the lot, getting up to 30-40 MPH, and applying the brakes with enough force for the ABS to activate. During the demonstration, after approximately half of a dozen successful runs, I did the exact same thing except the ABS failed to activate, which resulted in a front tire skid and a single vehicle crash. …”

NHTSA complaint #10262860, filed 2009-03, 19,893 miles

Transmission and drivetrain: “The contact owns a 2006 Bmw K1200 R motorcycle. The contact stated that while driving 35 MPH, the vehicle shifted out of gear and vibrated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who stated the transmission had failed. The transmission was replaced. The failure was reported to the manufacturer. The failure mileage was 5,600. The current mileage was 5,700. Updated 07/10/13”

NHTSA complaint #10520713, filed 2013-06, 5,600 miles

Electrical system: “I have complained about this issue multiple times to multiple Bmw dealers and all act like they've never heard of what I am describing. It's all over the message boards and there are many people with this problem. Engine cuts off when the clutch is pulled in and the idol drops. It is very difficult to restart the bike quickly as it seems to need 30 seconds to 2 minutes to rest before pressing the ignition button will do anything. This has happened to me at low speeds and at high speeds but typically under similar conditions. …”
