What owners report

Owners of this model year most often describe engine overheating, coolant leaks and smoke from the engine compartment, and many complaints mention a water pump connector recall repair that was not yet available. Sudden power loss is also reported, mostly at higher mileage, while oil leaks from plastic housings appear at lower mileage. Overheating and smoke reports include vehicles above 100,000 miles as well as some with lower mileage.

  1. Engine cooling

Overheating, coolant leaks and smoke under the hood

    • 22 complaints (42%)
    • median 92,900 mi at 9.9 yrs old (10 state mileage)
    • 3 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2020–2026

Owners describe engine overheating warnings, coolant leaks and smoke from the engine compartment, with some reporting a failed water pump, a thermostat fault, or a cracked radiator hose or radiator. Some complaints say smoke entered the cabin through the vents, and some describe a fire or engine failure after warning lights came on. According to complaints, dealers diagnosed some failures as a water pump or thermostat problem, and in some cases the repair did not stop the overheating from returning. Reported from about 22,000 to 134,000 miles where mileage is listed, and some describe smoke or overheating while driving or right after starting.

What to check: Check the coolant level and look for leaks at the water pump, thermostat and radiator hoses, and ask whether any cooling-system repairs have recurred. Ask whether the water pump connector recall repair has been completed, and watch for smoke or a burning odor during a test drive.

    NHTSA complaint #11413314, filed 2021-04, 22,000 miles

“This is a complaint surrounding the recall on the vehicle. I have called the dealerships closest to me 4 times over the last month and a half to remedy with no such luck. My car 12/15, was smoking from the water pump location in the engine. It has done this when driving for more than 20 minutes or driving for the first time if taking the weekend off from doing so. There is a burning smell that comes in from the vents. I have had the oil changed and inspected, there was no leak found either time. …”

  2. Electrical system

Water pump connector recall: remedy not yet available

    • 25 complaints (48%)
    • median 97,500 mi at 10.0 yrs old (8 state mileage, few)
    • 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2022–2025

Owners say the water pump connector recall was announced, but the dealer reported that the repair part was not yet available. Complaints describe waiting months or longer, and some say the manufacturer had taken more than a reasonable time to provide the repair. Some owners say a dealer lookup confirmed the parts were not available, and some describe smoke or overheating while the recall remained open. Most complaints here do not list mileage, and where it is listed it is about 80,000 to 88,000 miles.

    Recall 24V608000

What to check: Ask the dealer whether the water pump connector remedy is now available and whether it has been performed on this vehicle. Check the vehicle's VIN in the official recall lookup before buying.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“There is an outstanding recall concerning coolant pump fire hazard. It has been more than a year since I got a recall notice. When I contacted a local BMW dealer, they said there is no remedy available YET. This is an urgent issue the manufacture must fix it soon. The wait has been too long!”

    NHTSA complaint #11681438, filed 2025-08

“Current owner of a 2015 BMW X1 bought in Feb 2025. Was informed by the car dealer at that time there is currently an unresolved important safety recall campaign for NHTSA Recall Number 24V608000 - Water Pump Connector May Short Circuit opened back in August 2024. I reached out to the local BMW dealer for a status update if the remedy was available and they indicated a remedy is still not available. They had me contact BMW Customer Relations for a better status update. …”

  3. Engine

Sudden power loss or stalling while driving

    • 13 complaints (25%)
    • median 101,000 mi at 10.0 yrs old (6 state mileage, few)
    • 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2021–2026

Complaints describe losing motive power or going into reduced power, sometimes with warning lights on, and in some cases the engine stalling or failing to restart. Other complaints describe hesitation when pressing the accelerator and a complete electrical shutdown while on a highway. According to complaints, some of these vehicles were towed, and some were not diagnosed or repaired at the time of the complaint. Where mileage is listed, these complaints fall between about 88,000 and 109,000 miles, and some describe the problem occurring at highway speeds or around 50 mph.

What to check: Ask whether any reduced-power or engine warnings have appeared, and have a technician scan for stored fault codes before buying. During a test drive, check that the car responds promptly when shifting from reverse to drive and when accelerating from a stop.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“Complete electrical failure while driving on the Highway. I barely was able to get over without causing an accident. The car without notice went dead and no power. I couldn't turn the steering wheel. Lots of warning lights started flashing then completely dead.”

    NHTSA complaint #11716607, filed 2026-02

“While driving, an engine malfunction message appeared on the X1's panel display. The warning message was to proceed, under reduced power , to a dealer as soon as possible to initiate repairs before engine damage could occur. Under these emergency conditions all panel functions, such as GPS, were blocked. I believe this failure, occurring under normal operating conditions, puts passengers at risk. At the dealer engine error codes identified the N55 engine's internal failure to be of the Valvetronic system. …”

Buying note. When considering this model year, confirm whether the water pump connector recall repair has been completed, since many complaints describe long waits for a remedy. Ask for records of cooling-system and engine repairs, and check for oil leaks and whether a timing chain warranty extension applies before buying.

Summary written with AI from a sample of 51 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. The excerpts come from NHTSA's public complaint records and are unverified; capitalisation is normalised, NHTSA staff notes are removed, and shortened text ends with “…”. Something wrong? Example complaints

Electrical system: “This car has had fuel leaking since the moment I drove it off the lot. I messaged the dealer, and received no response. Living in Arizona without a working AC in the car is also quite a nightmare. At the moment the smell of gasoline is extremely intense and I feel worry about my baby riding in a car. It would be great if, BMW came forward, to do what’s correct, and fix the car’s issues, as it is constantly breaking down from one thing or the other. Thanks”

NHTSA complaint #11492164, filed 2022-11

Engine cooling: “The contact owns a 2015 BMW X1. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, the vehicle hesitated while starting. Additionally, while stopped in traffic, the vehicle was shaking abnormally. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who determined that the camshaft position sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 97,000.”

NHTSA complaint #11727256, filed 2026-03, 97,000 miles

Engine: “experience issues starting up due to a failure of the starter motor. Repeated attempts at stating the vehicle can cause the motor to overheat due to an electrical overload, potentially catching combustible materials in the engine compartment and increasing the risk of fire.”

NHTSA complaint #11607785, filed 2024-08

Other or unknown: “This is regarding the panoramic sunroof shade/liner. All of a sudden, half of it is stuck and will not work. It will not close or open. I have an extended warranty and this is not covered somehow with Bmw - and they want $1000's just to diagnose the problem. After searching online, I see that this is a very common problem with numerous and numerous X1 owners of the same vehicle and that others have issued a complaint regarding the same issue. Here's to hoping something is done and a recall issued. Thanks.”
