What owners report

Owners of this model year most often describe a failing instrument cluster, where the speedometer and other gauges read erratically or stop working altogether. A second common theme is a "Service Air Bag" message traced to impact sensors, along with fuel odors from lines that rub together. Reports span a wide mileage range, from under 20,000 miles to well past 200,000.

  1. Electrical system

Speedometer and instrument cluster gauge failure

    • 20 complaints (28%)
    • median 62,500 mi at 5.1 yrs old (16 state mileage)
    • filed 2008–2016

Owners describe the speedometer sticking, reading far too high or too low, dropping to zero, or failing to reset when the vehicle stops; some report other gauges such as the fuel gauge, oil pressure, water temperature and tachometer failing as well. Dealers typically said the instrument cluster needed replacement, and several owners were told the vehicle was not covered by any recall or that repair costs would be theirs. Complaints describe the problem appearing intermittently at first and then becoming constant. Reported from under 47,000 miles to beyond 150,000 miles, with many cases in the 55,000-90,000 mile range and a number appearing within months of purchase.

    Recall 05V0550002 related service bulletins

What to check: On a test drive, watch whether the speedometer returns to zero at a stop and moves smoothly with speed. Ask whether the instrument cluster has ever been replaced or repaired.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“While traveling on the interstate in my 2005 chevy Avalanche I noticed that my speedometer read 90mph vs. 40/45mph. I pulled off the highway and placed the vehicle in park and the speedometer read 50mph while the vehicle was stopped. Gm states that my vehicles VIN do not fall within the range of their bulletin for recalls.”

    NHTSA complaint #10273153, filed 2009-06, 53,000 miles

“Speedometer has stopped working properly. It may not move at all or it may tell me I am going 120 MPH. I know of several other Avalanche owners that have had or are having the save problem. The vehicle has less than 47,000 miles. I spoke to the dealer and was told there is a recall on older models, but not on my 05.”

    NHTSA complaint #10247563, filed 2008-11, 46,500 miles
  2. Air bags

Service air bag light from impact sensor faults

    • 11 complaints (15%)
    • median 44,750 mi at 8.0 yrs old (10 state mileage)
    • 2 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2005–2021

Complaints describe a "Service Air Bag" message or warning light appearing, often at start-up, with dealers diagnosing a front impact sensor, seat wiring or harness problem. Some owners had sensors replaced more than once and the light returned, and a few reported the light coming on with no stored code found. In complaints involving crashes, some owners said the front air bags did not deploy. Reported from roughly 17,000 miles up to about 124,000 miles, including several vehicles under 50,000 miles.

    2 related service bulletins

What to check: Check that the air bag light comes on briefly at start-up and then goes out; a light that stays on points to a sensor or wiring fault worth diagnosing before purchase.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“I was on the highway at cruising speed and I happened to look down and my dit says service air bags and shortly after onstar calls me asking if everything was alright. I did some research and got LED in many different directions saying there was a recall for air bag sensors and also recall in the t connector in the ds kick panel.”

    NHTSA complaint #10585072, filed 2014-04, 127,000 miles

“Went to start my vehicle and it flashed service airbag. Took it to the GM dealer and they say its the left front impact sensor. I have heard that this is a common issue for these vehicles and think that this being a safety issue, should be covered by the manufacturer.”

    NHTSA complaint #10501069, filed 2013-03, 86,019 miles
  3. Fuel system

Fuel odor and leaks from rubbing fuel lines

    • 9 complaints (13%)
    • median 110,000 mi at 9.0 yrs old (9 state mileage, few)
    • filed 2012–2015

Owners report a strong gasoline smell, then find fuel dripping or pouring from lines near the driver side. Several complaints describe two fuel lines that touch and rub until they wear through and leak, and others describe rusted lines or a fuel pump module replaced because of corrosion. Dealers or shops replaced the affected lines, pump or canister; some owners said their vehicle was not included in the recall they had heard about. Mostly reported between about 75,000 and 220,000 miles, often noticed after the vehicle sat or after a drive.

    1 related service bulletin

What to check: Smell around the driver side and under the hood after a drive, and ask whether the fuel lines have been inspected or replaced. Have the lines checked underneath before a long trip.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“After driving the smell of fuel comes from the engine by the drivers door. I contacted GM and my vehicle does not show on the list of this known recall. They passed me to a local dealership which stated my vehicle is not one that falls under the recall and admitted they had fixed others with similar issues. This is appalling that a manufacture can assist some customers but not all. I will never purchase another GM vehicle again.”

    NHTSA complaint #10694087, filed 2015-03, 110,600 miles

“Noticed a strong gas odor in the garage. I couldn't see any leakage until I started (pressurized the fuel lines). I noticed a braided area of the fuel lines that cross over each other, touching, which caused them to rub together creating a pin hole in each line. When pressurized, they shoot fuel out. Luckily, they didn't cause a fire as we had just finished a 700 mile trip with our grand kids. The shop wants $805 to replace the lines. This is a safety hazard that should be recalled. Very dangerous!!!”

    NHTSA complaint #10475437, filed 2012-09, 110,000 miles
  4. Transmission and drivetrain

Transmission slipping, harsh shifting or gear loss

    • 9 complaints (13%)
    • median 47,000 mi at 7.3 yrs old (9 state mileage, few)
    • filed 2005–2014

Complaints describe hard or jerky shifting, the transmission slipping out of gear in traffic, a "Transmission Hot" message, and in some cases loss of second and fourth gears. Owners report dealers advising a rebuild or replacement, and some were told the transmission cooler or fluid cooling was inadequate. Reported from under 15,000 miles to about 110,000 miles, with several cases between 37,000 and 88,000 miles.

    4 related service bulletins

What to check: Drive at low and highway speed and feel for delayed or harsh shifts, and check the transmission fluid level and condition. Ask whether the transmission has been serviced or rebuilt.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“Vehicle transmission slipped out of gear and slammed into what I assumed park in the middle of traffic in the middle of rush hour. Thank god nobody got hurt because had there been a vehicle ridding close to be they would have ran straight into me! This is clearly an safety issue that could've cause someones' life had I've been gooing at top speeds. Somebody needs to do something about this!”

    NHTSA complaint #10515120, filed 2013-06, 103,567 miles

“Purchased may 31, 2005. 39 mileage. $43,000.00. 8 months later the transmission started jerking. We took it to the dealer 6+ times and they said they couldn't find anything. Now at 75,000 miles it won't drive in d it has to be in 3, 2, 1 to drive. I have read 100's of complaint about transmissions in 2000-2010 models. Gm needs to take care of their customer transmission problem or design a better transmission.”

    NHTSA complaint #10489594, filed 2012-12, 10,698 miles
  5. Brakes

Rusted brake lines and brake pedal going to the floor

    • 5 complaints (7%)
    • median 105,000 mi at 8.2 yrs old (4 state mileage, few)
    • filed 2005–2015

Owners describe the brake pedal sinking to the floor with little or no braking, and shops finding severely corroded brake lines, often at the bracket on the driver side frame rail. Complaints also mention rusted rotors and caliper bolts, and in one case the brakes failed to engage while driving. Some owners had to use the parking brake to stop. Mostly reported between about 105,000 and 220,000 miles, with some line failures noted at lower mileage.

    Recall 05V0430001 related service bulletin

What to check: Have the brake lines inspected along the frame rail for rust and corrosion, especially on vehicles from salt-road areas, and ask whether any lines or the hydro-boost assembly have been replaced.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“Catastrophic brake failure because of four corroded brake lines. All four lines corroded in the bracket holding the lines to the driver side frame rail. I was driving the vehicle and when I attempted to apply the brakes there was initial resistance and then the brake pedal went straight to the floor. I attempted to apply the brakes again but the vehicle would not stop. I had to apply the parking brake to stop.”

    NHTSA complaint #10809980, filed 2015-12, 220,000 miles

“The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche. While driving 70 MPH, the vehicle began to decelerate and the brakes failed to engage. The contact stated that the brake rotors overheated and produced steam. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 120,000.”

    NHTSA complaint #10671796, filed 2015-01, 120,000 miles

Buying note. This model year shows recurring instrument cluster and air bag sensor complaints that are usually diagnosed and repaired rather than recalled, so service history for those items is worth asking about. A pre-purchase inspection that includes the brake lines, fuel lines and a transmission test drive covers the areas owners most often describe.

Summary written with AI from a sample of 60 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. The excerpts come from NHTSA's public complaint records and are unverified; capitalisation is normalised, NHTSA staff notes are removed, and shortened text ends with “…”. Something wrong? Example complaints

Electrical system: “The speedometer sticks at a speed and will drop to the 6 o'clock position. This is a know issue among owners but GM nor the dealerships are willing to acknowledge or fix it. This is the second issue with my vehicle that GM is not willing to fix or take responsibility. I will never purchase another GM vehicle again.”

NHTSA complaint #10694091, filed 2015-03, 108,784 miles

Air bags: “Was driving home on the highway and swerved hitting the divider with the front left corner of vehicle. The seatbelts did not hold me in my seat and my head shattered through the window striking the street light lamp. Airbags also did not deploy meanwhile I was on the highway going about 57mph. The injuries were drastic including partial amputation of my ear, I was in a coma for a few week, 3 skull fractures, tbi, brain bleeding and the list of injuries continue to grow!”

NHTSA complaint #10648483, filed 2014-10, 121,000 miles

Fuel system: “Supply and return fuel lines have a flexible, shielded section at the frontmost end ... The hoses cross and therefore rub against one another ... Top hose became worn through, causing copious quantities of fuel to be pumped out onto the cross member and roadway ... Extreme fire hazard.”

NHTSA complaint #10585768, filed 2014-04, 115,000 miles

Transmission and drivetrain: “Right after the warranty expired the transmission went and I had to rebuild it. At the shop the techs told me it was due to cooling, and they installed a small cooler because they said the cooling was not sufficient.”
