What owners report

Owners of this model year most often describe brake problems, especially brake lines that have rusted through and let the pedal go to the floor, usually at higher mileage. Instrument cluster faults (speedometer and fuel gauge) and air bag warning lights also come up regularly, with some transmission and steering complaints at low mileage.

  1. Brakes

Rusted brake lines / pedal to the floor

    • 66 complaints (32%)
    • median 108,605 mi at 10.9 yrs old (56 state mileage)
    • 2 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • owner-quoted repair $1,450 (median of 8 quotes)
    • filed 2003–2016

Complaints describe the brake pedal sinking to the floor, sometimes with little or no warning, and fluid leaking near a wheel or along the frame. On inspection, owners and mechanics find the steel brake lines corroded and holed, and several report having all lines replaced. Some say the dealer replaced lines or quoted a full set; a few note parts were hard to obtain. Mostly reported between roughly 50,000 and 160,000 miles, in vehicles several years old.

    Recall 04V0450001 related service bulletin

What to check: Have the brake lines inspected underneath, especially along the frame and above the rear axle, for rust or weeping. Ask whether any lines have been replaced and with what material.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“I was driving my 03 Avalanche like any other day and as I was pulling into the gas station to fill up, the brakes went to the floor. Instinctively I put it into 1st gear and engaged the emergency brake. Come to find out, the brake lines were rusted out on the passenger side front. I examined all lines and they seem to all be rusty. Only a matter of time before they break too.”

    NHTSA complaint #10626029, filed 2014-08, 188,000 miles

“Brakes failed due to a rusted brake pipe while driving home from work. Luckily I was on my street and traveling just under 25 MPH. After inspection of the under side of vehicle I discovered not one but, two leaks. I do expect some issues with a vehicle my age and mileage but, not a total brake failure. I did contact the dealer for replacement parts just to learn that the parts have been discontinue.”

    NHTSA complaint #10556147, filed 2013-12, 154,798 miles
  2. Electrical system

    Speedometer and gauge cluster faults

    • 27 complaints (13%)
    • median 67,000 mi at 5.1 yrs old (23 state mileage)
    • owner-quoted repair $500 (median of 6 quotes)
    • filed 2004–2014

Owners describe the speedometer reading high or jumping around while parked or driving, and sometimes sticking at 120 mph; the fuel gauge and other gauges may also read wrong or stop working. Complaints say mechanics identified the instrument cluster as the cause, and some mention a limited-mileage coverage program they did not qualify for. Reported from about 60,000 to 120,000 miles, with some earlier.

    3 related service bulletins

What to check: With the key on and the engine off, watch whether the speedometer and fuel gauge sit at zero and full as expected. Ask if the cluster has been repaired or replaced.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“My speedo and fuel gauge either do not work or peg out in the instrument cluster. I never received the recall notice for my z71 Chevrolet Avalanche and Chevrolet is saying that they put a limit on the year and mileage. If I would have known it was a recall I would have taken in my vehicle to have it fixed for free. Chevrolet is saying I have to pay for this.... This is not right.”

    NHTSA complaint #10493064, filed 2013-01, 84,900 miles

“My speedometer needle started going haywire. Some days it works and some it doesn't. When it isn't working it will say I am doing any where from 30 to 120 when I am not moving. This is a genuine safety hazard and there needs to be a recall done asap. I called the dealership and was told that they would have to duplicate the problem and to see if the vehicle qualifies. I have read many other complaints regarding the same problem.”

    NHTSA complaint #10246037, filed 2008-10, 65,543 miles
  3. Air bags

    Air bag warning light on

    • 12 complaints (6%)
    • median 81,416 mi at 6.0 yrs old (11 state mileage)
    • 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 2004–2015

Complaints describe the service air bag light coming on and staying on, sometimes intermittently, with owners told the passenger-side module or seat-related wiring was at fault. Some say the dealer declined free repair because the vehicle was out of warranty, and a few mention warning chimes or audio noise at the same time. Reported mostly between about 45,000 and 120,000 miles.

    1 related service bulletin

What to check: Check that the air bag light comes on briefly at start-up and then goes out. Ask whether the seat wiring or module has been inspected or replaced.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“All of a sudden while driving one day the service air bag light came on and stayed on. I was told that the air bag could deploy at any time and not work if we where in a crash. I called GM about the issue after looking on line and realizing my truck was not the only one experiencing this issue and was told they would not pay to fix it as there is no recall. The truck was never in an accident and has lower mileage then allowed. This is definitely and issue. …”

    NHTSA complaint #10643870, filed 2014-10, 119,400 miles

“The service airbag light would come on intermittently. There would be a low thump thump sound emanating from the audio speakers. The lock door chimes stopped sounding.”

    NHTSA complaint #10641488, filed 2014-10, 81,416 miles
  4. Transmission and drivetrain

    Early transmission failure and noise

    • 6 complaints (3%)
    • median 15,000 mi at 2.1 yrs old (5 state mileage, few)
    • filed 2004–2012

Owners report whining or growling noises while shifting, slipping in a gear, harsh shifting, and in some cases complete loss of gears at low mileage leading to a rebuild. Complaints say dealers could not find trouble codes or duplicate the noise at first. Mostly reported under about 20,000 miles.

    3 related service bulletins

What to check: On a test drive, listen for whine or growl in first and second gear and feel for slipping or harsh shifts. Ask for transmission service records.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“2003 chevorlet Avalanche 1500 - drive shaft universals failed (front gone, rear going. I had dealer replace both) - I noticed the noise and immediately took vehicle in. Had I not noticed or could not pinpoint the cause I may have continued driving and it could have failed and failing while driving on the thruway would not have been a good thing as the front end of the driveshaft impacts the road. …”

    NHTSA complaint #10153328, filed 2006-03, 55,000 miles

“I have had several issues with my 2003 chevorlet Avalanche z71 only 62,000 miles. My problems started around 8,000 miles with the rear brakes going bad. I have replaced the front and rear brakes four (4) times since I have owned it. The ABS speed sensors have been replaced once and need replaced again. The speedometer is stuck at 120 MPH, the u joints have been replaced and now the transmission has gone out. I feel that chevorlet should fix these problems under a warranty/recall.”

    NHTSA complaint #10444881, filed 2012-01, 62,000 miles
  5. Steering

    Steering clunk and looseness

    • 8 complaints (4%)
    • median 22,304 mi at 4.5 yrs old (7 state mileage, few)
    • filed 2004–2015

Complaints describe a clunking or loose-sounding steering wheel, especially at low speed or in turns, with the intermediate steering shaft replaced under warranty and then again later at the owner's cost. A few report the steering wheel locking briefly until the ignition was cycled. Reported from about 20,000 miles upward.

What to check: Turn the wheel lock-to-lock at low speed and listen for clunks; ask whether the intermediate shaft has been replaced.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“I have a 2003 Avalanche with approx.113000 miles. Recently while driving in a mini shopping center I went to turn into a parking spot and my steering wheel locked on me. I could not move my steering wheel at all. I then put my truck in park and turned the ignition off and cranked it back up and my steering wheel immediately unlocked. On that friday while driving on interstate 264e coming of exit my steering locked again. …”

    NHTSA complaint #10368825, filed 2010-11, 113,000 miles

“The other day I started noticing that when I turn right (or left in reverse) at a low rate of speed the vehicle makes a clunking noise and my steering is affected. I started looking online for a remedy to this problem and found that several people had the same problem and did not know where to report it. I don't feel it is fair that as the consumer that I am responsible for a design flaw by GM. I also don't feel its fair to have to spend up $400 when its all said and done each time that it will have to be repaired.”

    NHTSA complaint #10725848, filed 2015-06, 181,062 miles

Buying note. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on brake line condition underneath and on whether the instrument cluster and air bag warning lights behave normally. Service records for brake lines, the cluster and the steering shaft are worth asking for.

Summary written with AI from a sample of 60 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. Example complaints

Brakes: “I was about to slow down to make a turn on to a side street and my brakes went to the floor. I had to take back roads and plan my stops while driving in low gear to safely make it to the shop. A brake line burst. I was told that the lines are rusted and rotted. All the lines had to be replaced. It cost me about $1800.00.”

NHTSA complaint #10500720, filed 2013-02, 136,000 miles

Electrical system: “My speedometer in my 2003 Avalanche randomly started going back and forth between working and not working. Now it isn't working at all. I can't afford to have the instrument cluster replaced, with all the problems I have read about, this is something chevy should fix at no cost.”

NHTSA complaint #10285688, filed 2009-09, 92,000 miles

Air bags: “This concerning my 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche with 47,987 miles. The service airbag stays on after ignition about 20% of the time. Additionally on trips of over 15 minutes it will come on during driving. Once the warning light comes on it stays on until the vehicle is turned off. Contacted the Chevrolet assistance center and they explained that I would have to pay for a diagnostic work up before they would consider covering the costs on fixing the problem. They stated they were unaware of the problem, despite the owners of the vehicles being very aware of the problem. …”

NHTSA complaint #10145801, filed 2005-12, 45,500 miles

Transmission and drivetrain: “I noticed a spray on the back of my Avalanche. I checked nuder the vehicle and noticed a small puddle of fluid which appeared to be transmission fluid. I checked the fluid level and it was near empty. I added fluid and when I used the vehicle it ran ok, but when I stopped it left a larger puddle under the vehicle. I drove my vehicle for a little while and when I checked again it was leaking still. I crawled under the vehicle and saw that it was leaking from where it connects to the engine or axle. (not sure what its called). …”
