“I have owned several first generation (1995-1999) Dodge and plymouth neons. Without exception, all of them have/had corrosion on the fuel filler pipe that was so bad that gasoline spilled on the ground when they were filled. I believe this is a safety hazard and is not, in my experience, normal.”
NHTSA complaint #10427988, filed 2011-09, 142,000 miles“Replaced rusted out fuel tank that leaked fuel after filling it more then half-full. Repaired rusted out fuel inlet tube ( leaked when filling fuel tank) fuel tanks was recycled and still using inlet tube.”
NHTSA complaint #10182398, filed 2007-02, 150,000 miles“Gas tank leak (very slow and gradual). Noticed only while parked, left drops on garage floor. Car also had bad head gaskets, parking brake, and automatic transmission.”
NHTSA complaint #10267013, filed 2009-04, 50,000 miles“Fuel pump (20a) fuse randomly blows. 30a fuses used and also randomly blow causing vehicle to stall. No indication of problem with fuel pump itself. O2 sensor and EGR valve has been replaced. Mechanics have been unable to isolate the cause but have found different variations of circuit/wiring diagrams for this '95 NEON sport model vehicle. Mechanics have also received varying advice from Dodge dealerships on the cause and remedy. Result is safety hazard to vehicle driver and occupants if the system fails in traffic.”
NHTSA complaint #10028501, filed 2003-07, 74,000 miles“Neoprene cover over fuel drain nipple cracked, causing fuel leak. Part likely costs $2. Hill kelly Dodge (dealer) insisted the only means to correct was to replace entire fuel pump for $365. They allowed me to leave with the leak after I refused to pay $365, and dealer failed to replace safety shield over the area where fuel pump/ filter/wires, and tubes were located, thus allowing for possibility of object impact with fuel assembly.”
