“I was just getting back from lunch and was about to exit my vehicle when the handle broke. So I had to turn my car back on, roll my window down, open the door, roll my window back up...you get the rest. This is a huge concern for me because I have children and lord knows something serious happens and I can't get out of my car because my handle breaks!!!”

NHTSA complaint #10678368, filed 2015-01, 72,000 miles

“The vehicle was parked and when I went to open the door with the handle as usual it broke in my hand. I was unable to get out of the vehicle because of this. I have researched this matter and it has happened to a large amount of people. I feel that this is a flaw it the vehicle and the design of the door handle is poorly made.”

NHTSA complaint #10480986, filed 2012-10, 80,000 miles

“Drivers side door handle snapped is now just hanging. In order to exit vehicle need to roll window down , open door from outside , roll window back up , then turn vehicle off. This is a hazard......in an emergency...if power goes out while in car...I will not be able to exit vehicle.... What if my electric window stops working...then I am stuck....not safe....”

NHTSA complaint #10426576, filed 2011-09, 56,000 miles

“The front left interior door handle broke as I was trying the exit the vehicle. It appears that the cable and handle separated, leaving no way for me to open the door. This is extremely alarming to me because in case of emergency, I will not be able to exit the vehicle in a timely manner.”

NHTSA complaint #10554215, filed 2013-11, 80,000 miles

“After parking, I tried to open the door and the handle snapped. I was unable to open the door and had to crawl across the front seat to get out. This seems like a huge safety issue, and from what I can tell, a lot of other Nitro owners have had the same problem.”
