Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“While driving rack and pinion failed. This caused the consumer to lose power steering temporally. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.”

NHTSA complaint #10087463, filed 2004-08, 53,000 miles

“Dealer and chrysler both contacted with complaint. No resolution offered. Repaired by my mechanic who also contacted dealer, who offered no resolution. Same faiure recurred at 100,000 miles; repaired again by my mechanic who was surprised chrysler would not help. No safety defect (s) listed in summary.”

NHTSA complaint #715047, filed 1999-11

“I noticed fluid leaking from steering pump area. Low mileage car (well taken care of. When turning, I do not crank wheel all the way until it stops to keep pressure off seals in pump). I noticed fluid a few months ago but ignored it (not much leakage). When chrylser ovehauled my transmission 2 weeks ago, eventhough I forgot to mention to them, they did not see nor notify me of it. Another tactic of the dealer waiting for it to become more serious (thus more costly) to repair. There's no way they could have missed it!!”

NHTSA complaint #716258, filed 1999-12

“Dt: the consumer stated the bolts in rack and pinion steering had to be tightened constantly. This has been happening for two years. Vehicle was taken to the dealership, and they stated it was wear and tear. When the bolts became loose the wheel locked. Consumer continued to tighten the bolts, but it only lasted for no more than a week.”

NHTSA complaint #10130409, filed 2005-07

“The failure is 2 bushings attaching the rack to the steering gear have broken and fallen out, leaving metal bolts to hit metal which will eventually break the bolts, causing the car to be unsteerable. Dealer says the whole rack will have to be replaced because they can not get the bushings separate.”

NHTSA complaint #721395, filed 2000-04
