What owners report

Owners of this model year most often write in about airbags that did not deploy in a collision, followed by manual-transmission clutch and shift-linkage breakage and by steering shake that made the car hard to control. The complaints are spread across many years of use and many do not record mileage, so the pattern is one of age-related wear and parts availability rather than a single repeat failure.

  1. Air bags

    Airbags that did not deploy

    • 17 complaints (27%)
    • median 157,000 mi at 8.5 yrs old (1 states mileage, few)
    • 15 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 1995–2003

Owners describe frontal and offset collisions in which neither airbag deployed, including a head-on impact with an oncoming vehicle, a hit with a truck on a narrow road, and a curb-and-wall impact after a tyre blew out. A few complaints describe burns, melted clothing and breathing irritation after the bags did deploy, and one mentions the airbag warning light staying on in a used car that had been repaired after a crash. According to the complaints, dealers and insurers often had no explanation for the non-deployment. The deployment failures are described in crashes at a range of impact speeds, and most complaints in this sample record no mileage.

What to check: Watch the airbag warning lamp at startup to confirm it lights and then goes out, and ask whether the car has had front-end collision repairs; a scan tool can show stored airbag fault codes.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“While driving 45mph right front tire blewout, car hit curb, and ran into a brickwall head-on. Upon impact, neither driver's side nor passenger's side airbags deployed. Also, driver was previously in a crash, where he was rearended and forced into another vehicle. Also, then neither of airbags deployed. Vehicle has not been checked.”

    NHTSA complaint #893700, filed 2001-08

“Vehicle was involved in a collision. Upon frontal impact, passenger's airbag did not deploy . Passenger sustained facial injuries. Vehicle was totalled. Dealer not aware of proble, but problem still exists. Provide further information.”

    NHTSA complaint #842633, filed 1999-07
  2. Transmission and drivetrain

    Clutch and gear-shift linkage failures

    • 7 complaints (11%)
    • median 84,123 mi at 11.0 yrs old (2 state mileage, few)
    • filed 1997–2008

Owners describe the manual gear lever snapping or coming loose while driving, and in one case the car popped out of fourth gear twice before losing all transmission drive on the motorway. Several complaints involve the clutch cable breaking or the bracket holding it cracking, and one owner reported the clutch pedal going to the floor after the bracket bolts pulled through the firewall. Dealers replaced the shift lever, telling one owner the part had been redesigned, while other owners were quoted the repair at their own cost. The complaints that list mileage range from roughly 66,000 to 102,000 miles, and one pedal failure followed a replacement clutch fitted a year earlier.

What to check: Check the gear lever for looseness or play, inspect the firewall and pedal bracket area for cracks or previous reinforcement, and ask whether the clutch cable and its bracket have been replaced.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“On a 1995 Ford Aspire with 101,847 miles, the clutch pedal was getting harder to push down and getting closer to the floor upon release even though a new clutch was put in a year earlier. Also the brake pedal seemed to move around slightly. Both the clutch and brake pedals are on the same bracket. I was driving one day and there was a loud pop and the clutch pedal went to the floor. I thought the cable had broken but the bolts holding the bracket had come through the firewall. A new bracket had to be fabricated and the firewall strengthened. …”

    NHTSA complaint #10229674, filed 2008-06, 101,847 miles

“The throw out bearing started to go out, I was on my way home on the freeway when I had to slow down due to construction. I had shifted down to 4th gear, after I had done that, it popped out of 4th gear twice nearly causing an accident. I was almost home, so I proceeded, after a while longer the car hesitated for a split second then proceed for about a 1/4 mile when it lost all transmission power. After this occured, the engine continued to run fine. My car is now in the shop needing a new clutch & transmission. …”

    NHTSA complaint #726191, filed 2000-07
  3. Steering

    Steering shake and lock-up

    • 5 complaints (8%)
    • median 50,485 mi at 16.5 yrs old (1 states mileage, few)
    • 1 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 1996–2011

Owners report the steering wheel shaking violently at highway speed with the car swerving and hard to hold in its lane, and one describes the steering locking while turning, ending in an impact with a parked vehicle. Another owner reported the wheel becoming very difficult to turn at around 35 mph and said the dealer attributed it to the vehicle's age without running diagnostics or attempting a repair. One complaint describes a steering knuckle that was no longer made, leaving the owner to look for used parts. The one complaint listing mileage reports the fault at about 50,000 miles; the others describe shaking at highway speed without recording mileage.

What to check: Drive at highway speed and feel for wheel shake, wander or a stiff spot when turning, and ask whether the steering knuckle, tie rods or rack have ever been replaced and whether new parts are still available.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“Steering locked up whiling driving which caused an accident. Air bag deployed injuring consumer, stering locked up while attempting to turn, impacted parked vehicle at 30-35 MPH parked vehicle had minimal damage, however coonsumer's vehicle was totalled, passenger side air bag also deployed.”

    NHTSA complaint #986286, filed 1996-06

“Steering wheel shakes violently at speeds over 50mph, car swerves and is hard to control. When car is put in drive, it moves in reverse. Took car back to Ford service and they say this is normal ?”

    NHTSA complaint #725390, filed 2000-07
  4. Electrical system

    Under-hood electrical and instrument faults

    • 11 complaints (17%)
    • median 101,847 mi at 13.3 yrs old (1 states mileage, few)
    • 3 mention a crash, fire or injury
    • filed 1995–2008

One owner reports the car caught fire under the hood while parked, after a horn short. Other complaints describe a headlight switch failing where used replacements were already broken and a new part cost more than the car was thought to be worth, while speedometer faults produced an erratic, shaking readout that ended with the needle breaking off. Another owner had the speedometer cable replaced twice over several years. These complaints were filed through the late 1990s and early 2000s and generally do not record mileage.

What to check: Cycle the headlight switch through every position, watch the speedometer for a steady reading on a test drive, and look under the hood for scorched wiring, spliced harnesses or signs of a past fire.

2 excerpts from owner complaints in NHTSA records

“Air conditioner has always madenoise when operating now failing at low speeds capital Ford said needs replacement at $1300 . Speedometer is erratic at, times causing an inaccurate and shaky readout. The vibration has now caused the needle to break off dash has never been opened that I'm aware of we can no longer tell how fast vehicle is traveling.”

    NHTSA complaint #708788, filed 1999-07

“1995 Ford Aspire- headlight switch failed and repair shop is unable to obtain a used replacement part because all of the ones it has obtained are already broken. Cost of new part is $400, which is probably more than the car is worth.”

    NHTSA complaint #10041681, filed 2003-10

Buying note. On a car of this age the useful checks are condition and parts availability rather than history alone: confirm the airbag warning lamp behaves correctly, listen and feel for clutch or gear-lever looseness, and check whether steering and headlight components can still be sourced. Budget for wear items on a manual car and treat any recent front-end repair as a reason to look closer at the airbag system.

Summary written with AI from a sample of 32 NHTSA complaints for this model year (picked at random, with complaints that state a mileage and recent ones taken first), then checked automatically against the source records. Where a problem shows a complaint count, every complaint for this model year was matched with fixed keyword rules (written with AI and tested against the sample), and the mileage, age and repair figures are calculated from those complaints; owners' figures are as stated, not verified. Other counts refer to the sample. The excerpts come from NHTSA's public complaint records and are unverified; capitalisation is normalised, NHTSA staff notes are removed, and shortened text ends with “…”. Something wrong? Example complaints

Air bags: “Vehicle was traveling approximately 20-25mph on a dry 2 lane road and was involved in an accident with another vehicle going in opposite directions. As they met toward the center of intersection. Consumer was forced to hit head- on other vehicle. At same time passenger's car hit consumer's front right side, damaging bumper/tire and door. Between the 2 impacts airbags never deployed. Consumer didn't seem to think that problem was not an issue of theirs.consumer appealed to the auto safety hotline. Insurance adjuster scheduled an appointment to inspect vehicle.”

NHTSA complaint #894439, filed 2001-08

Transmission and drivetrain: “Gear shift lever broke (manual transmission) while driving. Was able to pull over safely due to light traffic, but could have been dangerous otherwise.”

NHTSA complaint #10019256, filed 2003-05, 66,400 miles

Engine cooling: “Catalytic converter needs repair although the car has less than 50,000 miles and only 6 years. The Ford repair shop states it does not fall under the warranty but the converter failed on its own and not due to owner's fault.”
