Example complaints

Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“My parents picked my daughter up from the school bus and proceeded down my driveway slowly. The vehicle suddenly accelerated even as my father had both feet on the brake. There were visible signs of the front wheels dragging up debris as the front wheels were locking up. He attempted to shift into neutral and turn the key but was unable to do so as the vehicle must have reached a speed in excess of 50 MPH before he slammed it into park and then ran head on into a tree. Both parent were injured severely even with the air bags deploying. The car was destroyed.”

NHTSA complaint #10479531, filed 2012-10, 150,000 miles

“Pinging is experienced when the throttle is open all the way during acceleration. The recommended fuel for this vehicle is regular unleaded, which I use. When I use premium there is no pinging. This has been evident the entire time I have had this vehicle. I brought the vehicle in for this problem during the warranty period and was told that it was normal, this is not normal. After the 100,000-mi tune-up the problem was not evident until about 5000 mi afterward. …”

NHTSA complaint #10080586, filed 2004-07

“The contact stated the vehicle accelerated suddenly without warning on three occasions. The first incident occurred while driving at an undetermined speed, but was not reported to the manufacturer. The second incident occurred while pulling up to a stop light at 35 MPH, the vehicle accelerated without warning into the intersection. The vehicle stopped only after the ignition was turned off. After the second incident the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who replaced a solenoid, but it was unknown whether the solenoid was in the engine or brake system. …”

NHTSA complaint #10157072, filed 2006-05, 72,000 miles

“While driving lost all engine power, but engine never stalled. When stepping on gas pedal nothing happened. It happened before on a incline hill, and could not hold vehicle from rolling back. Then, took vehicle to dealer, and they did not find anything. Consumer believed problem was traction control.”
