Selected from NHTSA records; personal details are removed. They are consumer reports, not findings.

“While traveling to work today, my 2001 Ford Escape stalled four times while driving. Each time, I was going between 20-35 MPH and the car just completely shut off. This is extremely dangerous as I have a young son who was riding with me at the time. The dealer stated they have had numerous cars do this.”

NHTSA complaint #10047158, filed 2003-11, 37,000 miles

“Auto stalled while going 30 MPH on a slight incline. Auto lost all power steering and electrical. It was lucky that no one was around (early morning). We had to coast to side, and because we didn't have power steering I hit the curb pretty hard. On the way home it did the same thing at about 40 MPH. Will take this to markel Ford in omaha, ne for fix. We have 44,000 miles, and if Ford cannot get this fixed it will be time to sell. This will be my first and last Ford, if I have to pay for this fix. Now I know why my father told me to buy a toyota.”

NHTSA complaint #10054790, filed 2004-01, 44,000 miles

“While driving, the vehicle stalled. The consumer restarted the vehicle and pulled over. The consumer drove the vehicle to the auto service for inspection and the mechanic informed the consumer that the problem could not be duplicated. There was grinding and a round metal object snapped and broke off of the AC compressor. There were also problem with the air bag and the steering.”

NHTSA complaint #10080083, filed 2004-08, 41,500 miles

“The display on my Ford Escape radio has stopped functioning correctly; the radio itself is functioning. After calling several repair shops, the dealer service center, and searching the internet it is very apparent this is a common occurrence in several of the oem radios and the result of a design flaw. Multiple websites and discussion pages refer to this issue as being the result of an overheat condition on the display board due to proximity of the power supply and improper heat dissipation.”

NHTSA complaint #10107657, filed 2005-01, 43,000 miles

“The blower on my A/C will start blowing thru the defrost when the vehicle is under power. I live in a mountainous suburb, so I'm constantly climbing hills. The air will blow thru the defrost for ~10 seconds when it first started a week ago; now it lasts ~20 seconds. Phil long has had my truck twice. The first time, the vehicle acted up for them and they found a crimped vacuum hose, yet the 2nd time, they couldn't get the vehicle to act up for them. As soon as I got to my suburb, it started cutting out on me.”
